Slow Day so I decided to do a medium dive on the Flame’s draft (More so the first round) and how it stacked up compared to others. A few notes:

Out of a bunch of exciting forwards still left on the board, Our boy has one of the more interesting profiles as his combo of speed, size and skill are near NHL ready.

Arguably the widest range of outcomes in first round picks. Not a terrible thing when 3rd line winger is probably your floor.

With perhaps higher point totalling picks still available, Honzek has a range of tools to retrieve and carry the puck. Knows how to use his (lean) 200 pound frame in many ways.

Had he not been injured at the World Juniors and performed the way he did with the giants in his first year on NA ice, he could have easily been picked in the top 10.

Wont drive a line on his own but with the right mates, has a point per game ceiling.

Ceiling comparables (faster, nicer) Jamie Benn.

Nichushkin but has a ways to go, away from the puck.

Rantanen but not nearly as smooth.

Seems our boy only really needs some good coaching to become NHL ready and settle into a middle 6 role sooner, rather than later. If he develops well, he is primed for playoff hockey.

I’ve watched all his highlights and I’m trying not to get too excited but holy FUCK this kids shot is unbelievable. I am beyond stoked to see what he can do in Calgary, and also very curious if he gets a chance this year or if he’ll go play a final season in Vancouver. The thought of Huberdeau feeding this kid passes with that rocket of a shot he has is very exciting.

Getting shooter version of Ruzicka vibes from him. Slightly more physical. Having a line of the two of them sounds like it could take over games when they’re both feeling it. A potentially streaky 2/3 line but if they ever learn consistency then pray for the other team’s bottom 6.
