I have a hot take regarding this summer, after we’ve signed every important player with the exception of Smith. Since we apparently needed money for Barbs, I can’t wrap my head around why we didn’t decide to save those 5mil by not signing Hill.
I do acknowlidge his part in winning the cup. Nevertheless, we’d have won it with a fit Brossoit or Thompson as well (I realize my take is getting even hotter). What I’m trying to say is that our defense was the reason why every of our 5 goalkeepers looked flawless.
While Hill definitely got overpayed only due to the “cup-tax”, Smith would have earned those 4.9mil. We also would very much manage with Thompson & Brossoit for next season.
That said, I haven’t been a GM yet. And a lot of things I was sceptic about (Fleury, Schmidt) turned out to be the correct move. In some I was right (Suzuki). In which category will Smiths departure land?

Who knows if thompson holds up we need hill so they can split opportunities so we can atleast have one healthy to defend our cup

Bro was great, but hill earned that contract full stop. We need multiple goalies, and him + Thompson for under 6 mil the next 2 years is a great deal. I always liked Smith, but for 5 mil keeping Barbie over Smith was an easy decision.
Smith isn’t getting any younger, whereas Barbashev cemented himself a role here long term. On top of that, Hill earned the opportunity to further improve his standing as an NHL goaltender in this league with his play, and Vegas needs proven bodies in the net in order for the system to work at its best. That’s BTW no disrespect to Thompson, as he’s young and will only get better, but Hill’s cup-winning experience with this team will have potential to be massive for this team moving forward, and him + Thompson as a tandem literally has the potential to be another Jennings Trophy tandem.
Smith’s still a good player, don’t get me wrong, but being on the wrong end of 30, and having other players come in and move you down the lineup, while having an unsustainable cap hit, is not how you stay on a team whom is against the cap.
I’ll take a Jennings Trophy potential tandem + Barbashev, over utilizing $10,000,000 on both Barbashev & Smith, while not having as loaded of an overall goaltending room.
Why are you comparing a goalie to a forward. It’s like asking why did you buy a new refrigerator you have a perfectly good TV. There are only so many spots to fill, Barbie is better and younger than Smith for the same price. Now a spot for Dorofeyev or Kotter opens up. Pretty typical off season moves.
Hill 100% earned that contract. Smith is 32, Barbie is 27. Easy choice

I mean we need two goaltenders and there aren’t many that are cheap, we got 2 pretty damn decent to excellent goaltenders at under 6 million and many teams hope to just get 1 for under 8
The math isn’t mathing. Even if they opt for Brossoit over Hill and keep Smith, they’d still be 2 mil over the cap so *someone* would be getting shipped out
