Are There Any Former Red Wings Deserving of Jersey Retirements? Sergei Fedorov? Pavel Datsyuk?

The Detroit Red Wings have a storied history spanning nearly 100 years, yet only 8 people have had the honor of having their jersey retired by the team. With Miikka Kiprusoff having his number retired by the Flames, we wonder, are there more deserving former Wings out there? Is the bar too high? #lgrw

  1. 1. Fedorov absolutely
    2. Datsyuk without question
    3. Zetterberg no Contest
Shanny, Chelios, Konstantinov, I can totally agree with.
Hate this opinion if you want but I think you can also make a serious arguement for Ozzy, he is the definition for being overlooked because of the players around him

  2. I think it would be great to build a Red Wings Hall of Fame onto LCA, like the Packers have. To put our players in as another way to honor those players other than retire there jersey or additional to

  3. 91,13 and 40 are all sure bets for number retirements in my book. I would also throw names like Draper, Maltby, McCarty or Holmstrom into the mix.
No cups without these guys putting in years of hard work in the dirty areas.
Also fan favorite Bob Probert could be a potential candidate though doubtfull to make it.

  4. I think Federov's jersey would look lovely hanging in the rafters of the Honda Center in Anaheim.

  5. Datsyuk won’t get his jersey retired only because he’s Russian and it’s really dumb. Same as fedorov. The illitch family needs to stop being hard noses and treat these players with the respect that they deserve

  6. Didn't the Wings offer Fedorov more than Anaheim when he left? I could swear that he left for LESS money because he wanted to see if he could be the number one guy.

  7. The only jerseys I ever bought were #91, #13 and #40 and they would definitely be hung in the rafters in that order. Go watch Fedorov and Datsyuk highlights and look at the pivotal game breaking goals and you'll be amazed how many there were.

  8. No they both wanted to leave could have stayed and retired as a red wing but one went to another team for little more money then the red wings offer so he left and Pavel wanted to leave he would have been paid well so he left its on them and they are both not a steve or nick or ted of number 9 come on

  9. I'm a high standards guy. When you look up in the rafters and you see 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 19, the other person who goes up there has to be in the same league. 91 is absolutely among them.

For 13 and 40, I'm not so sure. Datsyuk is far closer with all of his awards and the fact that he actually changed the way modern stars play the game.

I love Zetterberg, but there were many players better than him who played for the Red wings and don't have their number retired. I don't see him in the same echelon as Howe or Abel, Yzerman, etc. Until Lidstrom retired, he was 3rd best on the team.

If you can't retire 13 without 40, then don't retire either.

  10. Maybe the Wings should ease up a tad on their internal requirements for jersey retirement, and by that, I mean ever-so-slightly… but I do also enjoy the fact that we aren't retiring every number under the sun. There's teams who have players retired whose accomplishments pale compared to the players whose sweaters we haven't retired. Do I think Feds deserves to have his sweater retired? Absolutely. Cheli, Z, and Dats should all have their numbers in the rafters too. At the end of the day, it's up to management and ownership, to ease up on the internal restrictions within the organization. I hope they do. Those players all deserve it, and arguably a few others like Shanny too… but I don't love my Red Wings any less if they don't.

  11. My thing is if they aren’t going to let any other player that comes in wear the number they might as well retire it. If no one will ever wear 91 again I don’t get why they just don’t retire it same as #16. It’s just one of those things they have to decide on and not keep letting it drag on

  12. The crazy part about all this is 91,16,13 and I not sure about 40 aren’t even in circulation anymore.. they’ve already said no one will ever wear those numbers that’s how Larkin got 71… so just retire em

  13. Datsyuk and Zetterberg may not have the points but, they played in the dead puck era and they were both 2 of the best two way forwards in the entire league for a decade. If it is not for Datsyuk and Z, no cup in 2008 and playoff streak ends 10 years earlier, their numbers should absolutly be retired

  14. Datsyuk will get his retired I think . Hank imo should but I understand why he doesn’t if he don’t . Feds absolutely better be in the rafters . That dude is still to this day the most complete player in his prime that I’ve ever seen

  15. I think it is less being a lifelong Red Wing and more total years. Every player retired was a Red Wing for 12 or more years (total). And they were elite players both as Wings and in the league.

  16. This is an easy one. Obviously it’s Anthony Mantha. Also, who tf is “Lindstrom”??

  17. Datsyuk is my favorite player, but Zetterberg should get it first. He was a captain, and he didn’t leave the team high and dry by “retiring” early.

  18. federov has no business in detroits rafters. he took a 10 .Illinois dollar paycut to go play for the team. that swep us in the playoffs that year.

  19. My thoughts are Fedorov, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg's numbers should 100% be retired… But I also feel like Osgood's 30 should be retired. He had a great career and had amazing numbers… He stopped the pucks he needed to stop… His 2.50 GAA career wise is amazing to me.

  20. As long as current players have the right to use them, with permission of course. There is a possibility that maybe one or more should share that honor. They only have so many numbers to use.

  21. 91 and 13 are automatics and I would put 40 there as well

I would put Shanny in the rafters. He was the missing piece that put the Wings over the top and started the run of Cups

He brought firepower, toughness, and intangibles and was a guy born to play playoff hockey

    Plus, he clotheslined Roy lol

  22. I get the feeling Federov doesn’t like Detroit anymore…like he wouldn’t even come back for it

  23. All you fan girls over fedorov…put it this way…..your spouse left you for a person in a wheelchair….you still about to tattoo that name on you?!…its not deserved

  24. The 3 things that Sawchuk, Howe, Lindsay, Abel, Delvecchio, Kelly, Yzerman & Lidstrom have in common, is 1.) Played most, if not all of their careers with the Wings.
2.) Won a Stanley Cup or Cups
    3.) Is in the HOF

With that being said, Fedorov's number should being in the rafters at LCA.
It's crazy that Shanahan doesn't have a number retired with any team. He was named one of the top 100 players in the history of the League.
Datsyuk will get his number retired once he gets in the Hall next year. Zetterberg will most likely get in the HoF. He'll get his number retired as well.
I believe Osgood will eventually get into the HoF as well. So #30 should be hanging at LCA someday.

  25. I could also see Fedorov's number being retired once the war in Russia is settled. Just an opinion.
