Every NHL Expansion

Kinda relevant, but the Leafs blocked Vancouver getting an NHL team twice. First during the 1967 expansion, a year later when the Seals were trying to relocate.

I think it makes sense to split out vegas and Seattle since they are much later than the others. Also why do the Jets get in again when teams like carolina aren’t?

I’d group the Thrashers and Predators with the Blue Jackets and Wild.

I remember back then, they were seen as the “4 expansion teams” coming in, almost as a group. Even the old NHL website at the time put them on the same webpage, as if they were in the same wave of expansion.

Also I wouldn’t include the current Winnipeg Jets. They’re a relocation of the Thrashers, not an expansion team.

The newest Winnipeg jets aren’t an expansion. They’re a move and no moves (canes, Avs, Calgary, Dallas) are recorded.

Just popping in to blow the Minnesota North Stars logo for a moment. So fucking dope. 🫡

Leafs and Habs were original franchises. Bruins, Hawks, Wings, Rangers were 1920s expansion

The Jets 2.0 were not an expansion team

The league of 12 doesn’t sound as good as Second Six. The former sounds like an English action movie.

    I guess the 1920s expansions don’t count.

This would be cooler if it was at the yearly level and showed expansion/subtraction/relocation

The early 1990s expansion teams and late 1990s/early 2000s expansion teams should be two separate groups.

  11. skol_sota

BJ’s and Wild should should not be grouped with the Knights and Kraken as they were nearly 2 decades apart. Also, the 2000 expansion duo were given bread crumbs and told to figure it out…. Kraken and Knights were given the whole damn loaf.

This is definitely not every expansion but you covered most

  13. Condition_Boy

Aren’t the Thrashers and the second jets the same franchise and not an expansion?

  14. Oilersfan78

Jets 2.0 wasn’t an expansion it was a relocation

  15. fredlikefreddy

Why does is she the second Winnipeg jets. Aren’t they just the trashers?

  16. 5599Nalyd

Seattle, Vegas, and Winnipeg are not 2000’s expansion teams.

A few things wrong with this.

Firstly, The “original six” were definitely not the actual original six. They were just the most stable teams to survive the turbulent early years of the league. The league was founded in 1917, while the “original six era” didn’t start until the Brooklyn Americans folded in 1943. If you’re going to include teams like the Seals, then you’ll also need to include teams like the Americans, Maroons, original Senators etc. And if you’re showing the “expansion” name of each team, then it would be the Detroit Cougars, Toronto Arenas, etc.

Second, if you’re just showing at what point the franchise entered the league, then the new Jets shouldn’t be on here. They were the relocated Atlanta Thrashers, not an expansion team.

Third, you’re mostly going chronological order, then switching to alphabetical for the 90’s and 00’s for some reason. San Jose was the first team added in the 90’s, followed by Ottawa+Tampa, followed by Anaheim+Florida, followed by Nashville+Atlanta. Then you’d have Minnesota+Columbus, then Vegas, then Seattle for the 2000’s.

I’d even argue then to split out the 4 team expansion from 98-00 as all 4 teams were announced at the same time, and then Vegas and Seattle as a separate round of expansion.

Fourthly, 1970 is not part of the 70’s expansion for some reason? If that was just to fill out the tiers, get rid of the “1970” row, and make a “98-00 expansion” row for Nashville, Atlanta, Columbus, and Minnesota.

I would definitely separate Vegas and Seattle from the others. Current Winnipeg isn’t an expansion. Also even though Nashville arrived in 1998-99 I would put it with the Thrashers/Wild/Jackets because they literally happened in three straight years
