Oh, what could have been… I’ve always wondered how Gretz truly felt about Mess leaving a year later. He came here in large part because of his old friend, and then Mess absconds to Vancouver. Gretz must have been like “Dude, we just made it to the ECF and you’re gonna leave? What the actual fuck.”

Gretzky was a shell of his former self with the Rangers but he was still one of the best players in the world (6th in points, 11th in PGP). Incredible in the ’97 playoffs with Hat Tricks against the Panthers and Flyers, some of those goals in vintage Gretzky style. One of the few bright spots of his final two seasons.
I’ll never forget going to an early December game in his first year, Rangers were down a goal late in the 3rd, scored on a little deflection off the face-off with around 3 minutes left and then makes an incredible pass behind the net and against the boards to a wide open Bill Berg right in front of the net. Had 2 goals and 2 primary assists in a 6-5 win. Absolutely incredible!

I remember that and thinking it was going to be multiple Cups. It didn’t quite work out that way.
