I didn’t realize it at first, but the New York Rangers are legitimately probably in the best case scenario heading into the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the NHL’s play-in rounds. This is because they are playing the Carolina Hurricanes to start everything off, and will enter the playoffs officially if they defeat Carolina. Furthermore, the Hurricanes’ 1st round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft belongs to the Rangers due to the Brady Skjei trade earlier in the year.
At the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery on June 26th, if a play-in loser substitute pick wins the 1st overall spot, this will put Carolina’s pick in the running for that opportunity, assuming the Rangers defeat the Hurricanes. Thus, the possibility of the Rangers both winning the Stanley Cup and drafting Lafrenière within the span of a few weeks does indeed exist. It’s crazy.
On an organization that already boasts the young talent of Kaapo Kakko, Igor Shesterkin, Vitaly Kravtsov, K’Andre Miller, Lias Andersson, and more, a Lafrenière would be a crazy addition.
The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

He took penalties every game (at the worst times too), he was beaten in the zone constantly, he always lost his man. Ask Carolina fans, and they will tell you how much they hate Skjei as well. I was shocked the Rangers got a 1st rounder for him. He’s worth a 3rd-4th round pick. He is a good skater and that’s pretty much it.

So the rangers need to beat Carolina, Toronto has to lose, Carolina needs 1st overall, Toronto needs 2 or 3 because it is lottery protected and rangers get lower fo 2020 picks from Carolina. So rangers could get first only if both lose and Carolina wins first and Toronto gets 2 or 3
The pick was conditional, they get the lower of the 2 picks that Carolina has because they have the leafs pick too, but the leafs pick is top 10 protected so they need Carolina to win the lottery and leafs get a top 10 pick

Carolina also has Toronto’s 1st from the Patrick Marleau deal. The conditions of the Skjei deal is it’s the lower of the 2 first round picks.
HOWEVER, Toronto’s pick stays with the Leafs if it falls in the top 10, so this situation can only happen if Carolina wins the lottery AND Toronto’s pick also falls within the top 10.

Calling it now, the NHL draft will be rigged to have the first overall pick as one of the play in teams, forcing another draft lottery, all for entertainment purposes. Also Detroit and Ottawa aren't HUGE hockey cities. You heard it here first lol

The hurricanes have 2 1st round picks the rangers get the worse of the 2 so they can't possibly get 1st overall. If the hurricanes get 1st overall and the maple leafs get overall, the rangers would get that maple leafs pick which is currently owned by the hurricanes
