I'm very happy to see Dunn return but I'm not thrilled with the contract. While the AAV doesn't look terrible against the highest Defensemen in the NHL, it does look terrible against the other contracts on the Kraken. It is almost 25% higher than the next highest paid Kraken player. I can't help feel that if he doesn't beat or match this last season totals, which are his career high, each year of that 4 year contract or he continues to disappear in the playoffs, then we will have badly overpaid. Only giving him a 4 year contract seems to hint that the organization feels this could be an issue. Similarly, it feels like we didn't plan this out well and ended up with only bad options and no leverage left if we wanted to avoid totally destroying any offensive output from our defensive lines.
The contract is a relatively low risk play. Taking Dunn to 30 mitigates the risks of taking him to 34 and having him fall off due to age. It’s probably a slight overpay but an overpay of under 1m and locks in the excellent Dunn/Larsson pairing for a couple more years. It also leaves enough short term wiggle room in the cap situation to acquire a contingency player like a goalie, and handle and Matty performance bonus overages without rolling into next season.
