Grading the Montreal Canadiens 2023 NHL offseason

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens

With the major summer events behind them, the hosts take a look at Kent Hughes’ work as the Habs GM since the offseason began in today’s show.

Starting with the players the Canadiens didn’t qualify, or let go into free agency, did the front office miss anyone big? Or was letting veterans like Jonathan Drouin and Alex Belzile go the right plan? How do the hosts also feel about the Joel Edmundson trade?

After that, Scott and Laura discuss a divisive NHL Draft from the end of June. While David Reinbacher looks like a true gem in the Canadiens prospect pool, how did Hughes and the Habs grade overall?

Finally, free agency has slowed to a crawl, but Hughes has managed to get his work done in relatively quick fashion. The hosts discuss the rebuilding of the Laval Rocket’s lineup, plus locking up multiple other RFAs to great value deals for the upcoming few seasons. Has Hughes played it too safe, or is he setting the Canadiens up for a huge offseason next year when the salary cap goes up?

  1. One of the highlights in 2026 will be watching the Reinbacher sceptics munch on their humble pie

  2. Is Hedman a game breaking defender? Is Dahlin a game Breaking defender? Is Roman Josi a game breaking defender?…. Hedman and Dahlin both had a 0.49 PPG in their draft years… Reinbacher had a 0.48 PPG… Josi in his draft year had a 0.23 PPG… Josi and Hedman aren’t flashy defenders but they put up points and are a key piece to winning a cup even more important then having a Kucherov… Kucherov was AMAZING! In Tampas cup runs but I don’t think Tampa wins 2 cups without Hedman… Reinbacher could be exactly like Hedman or Josi I think we are really underselling what Reinbacher’s ceiling is… Reinbacher could be a 40-45 point defender for the first 3 years of his NHL career and then year 4 and onward he could be a 50-60 point defender consistently and having a couple seasons in his career with 70-80 points almost like Josi and Hedman… Reinbacher was the right pick for Montreal, I think Montreal has a better chance at winning a cup with Reinbacher then we would have had with Michkov, Benson or Leonard and I love all 3 of those forwards but Reinbacher does things that those forwards don’t do and Reinbacher will still be able to put up points… Montreal believes in the forwards that they have right now and lots of habs fans think it’s “not enough” lol and we need a “Superstar” 🤦🏼‍♂️ Suzuki last season with a completely healthy team was on a 100 point pace last season lmao and Caufield was on a 90 point pace… Kirby dach still has so much room to grow as a player and he was rated 10th!!! Last year in defensive centres… Dachs defensive game is HIGHLY UNDERRATED! Caufield is a 40-60 goal scorer I truly believe Caufield will hit 60 in his career and will get 40 or 50 most seasons… Juraj Slafkovsky is the only wildcard on our top 6 I could understand if habs fans have some worries about him but me personally I think he will turn out perfectly fine… At worst in my opinion Slafkovsky turns into a Solid 60 point winger and that’s at the worst, Slaf in my opinion will be a 78-85 point winger consistently and will probably have some 90 point seasons in his career I also have a Hot take that Slafkovsky will hit 100 points once in his career!… Alex Newhook’s coach from college said Newhook could come out next season and get 60 points if played properly and could touch 75-80 point seasons… Montreal could have 5 Top 6 forwards in the near future that are 65-90 point players lol THATS ENOUGH TO WIN!! If all our forwards like Newhook, Suzuki, Caufield, Dach and Slafkovsky hit their potentials we could be looking at a very very good Top 6 that is Balanced offensively and defensively and is a BITCH to play against every game AND with Salary cap room to add another player threw free agency in 2 season…. That’s not even mentioning Joshua Roy, Owen Beck, Filip Mesar, Emil Hienaman and other prospects coming up…. Montreal is actually more then okay when it comes to talent in the system and players on the roster not to mention we may end up with a top 13 pick this year in the draft… Our defence is gonna be on another level and will probably be up to par with teams like Buffalo, Ottawa, Colorado, The Rangers etc. Montreal could have one of the best D-Cores in the league in 5 years… Montreal is more then fine and we should be really excited for how this team is shaping up, This habs team may be the most exciting team we have seen in 30 years and the best we have seen….

  3. I think for HuGo to have a B+ off season, they only had to stay put. Signing an UFA for long and too much would have been a mistake at this time.

  4. the reinbacher pick was…okay, i guess, but i still would have picked someone else. if i'd known what the other teams were going to do, i'd have traded 5 and 31 to detroit for 9 and 17, and we could have drafted dvorsky and barlow. otherwise, philly for 7 and 22, then i take leonard and calum ritchie. i'd probably have been tempted to take hrabal at 37, if i didn't know fowler would be there at 69. i am really liking the fowler pick. if i did think fowler would be there at 69, i would have considered someone like maxim strbak for the RD spot, or taken anton wahlberg. i think arby's brother was taken at least 2 rounds too high, and if i was taking 3 goalies, one of them would have been milic (takern by wpg in 5th), or suchanek (undrafted). miller looks like he has some upside, though, and i know nothing of the russian. and yes, this means i wouldn't have made the newhook trade. for that offer i'd want someone like laf or kakko out of NY.

the caufield deal is a bargain. if he's healthy next year, he'll score 50, book it. the monahan deal is a bargain if he plays as many games as he missed last year, and at the level he was playing. we didn't overpay newhook, and we got a sensible return for edmundson. and we didn't get PLDiva, thank god. buyer beware. LA can change his diapers. these are all positives.

the thing is, we have too many bodies at the forward position, and we need to find a spot for a young player to come in and prove himself, like heineman, beck, or roy. i have a proposal. hoffman (50%), armia, vinzenz rohrer, 2025 4th to washington for anthony mantha. i'm not big on mantha himself, but he has the cap hit i want to make this sort of deal, and the caps wouldn't have a problem letting him go. anyway, the deal moves two bodies out and one in, and we have no salary commitment beyond this year, and that's the point of the deal. the money is almost even (5.65 out, 5.7 in). rohrer is an okay prospect but not vital.

reinbacher does fill a role, and he'll likely be paired with lane hutson in the future, and that could be a dynamite pairing.

we've done things i wouldn't have done, but we haven't done anything really stupid, and we've done some good things. we've had a pretty decent offseason.

i really like the fowler pick at 69, i think he could be a hell of a goalie.

  5. I think this draft was not based entirely in getting prospects, as much as an advanced rebuild draft. Lots of overagers and positional needs. They filled lots of organizational gaps. I think this indicates lots of organizational locks in the current core and D+ prospects coming in the system. I think they are looking at 2-3 years from now as the roster comes out of the rebuild. And not worrying about what is in the system 5-7 years from now.

  6. I cannot wait till Scott eats the cheeseburger with 20 slices of cheese on it! People subscribe now!!
