We’re going over that TSN Overdrive segment that talked about the idea of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ culture not being about winning and instead being about business.

  1. Well, … The Hockey Guy thinks every contract in the NHL is worth it – until they are not. The top players are overpaid, and that hurts all of the other players. Yet, the union allows such a high cap for a single player contract in the CBA even though most players will get paid less because of it.

  2. Matthews could get 15 mil in free agency. The 13 mil deal I hear for 5 years is a discount. Of course, if he takes less, he could be making millions in Toronto for the rest of his life instead of nowhere to be seen like Sundin but saying 13 mil for Matthews is not taking a discount is not valid. 11 mil and making him the captain would make me happy and 9 mil for Nylander and 10- 11 mil for Marner would be fantastic but Dubas set the standard. but Brodie and Murray are over 10 mil combined not to mention no first-round picks so no kids on entry-level contracts who could step in and outplay their contracts.

  3. If you dont care about winning and making lots of money, Toronto is the place to be for these guys, the sponsorship deals alone will ensure their great grandchildren will never need to work.

  4. Look at Chicago. They won the cup in 2015, then the big guys contract extensions kicked in. They never came close again.

  5. Can't have a Maple Leaf video without someone being salty AF about the salary cap. ;o) Disagree that if a player doesn't take "max value" that he's taking a discount. A team offering Matthews $15M and then can't win doesn't mean that he takes a discount by signing for "only" $13.5M in Toronto. Just as an example – if the Lightning core players take discounts and the Leaf's don't, the Lighting organization is at a significant advantage. AM/MM both maxxed out on their last contract, and if they do so again, the Leafs are not going to win IMO. Who on the Leafs will outperform their current deal? Samsonov and ?.

  6. The maple leafs are screwed! It’s quite the only thing that the Mapleleaf players care about is money! Way to go doofus i mean Dubas.

  7. When are they going to scrap the cap and pay each team and players equally. If you're that great you will be able to sell themselves for sponsorship and make a tonne more. get them working for the summer month getting more money via ads etc if they choose to. Make it simple and stop ripping the fans off by driving up ticket prices with salaries. nobody else is paying for their paychecks and is it really worth paying them that much to watch? I don't know. Give the teams and players raises yearly by profits generated each year just like anyone else does in a competitive work environment. Commissions and bonuses so to speak. and there's no problem ever. The team can focus on being a team and winning together equally. Fans win teams win networks win advertising win marketing might lose a little but we not paying to watch marketing happen. It just seems like a un selfishway to get paid and make it fun at the same time. They are blessed to be paid for a sport they love no need to get greedy and when they do. It is because of the "Market Value" Set by who the players? either way forget the market value and value the teams on a whole and spread the profits throughout the league yearly from one pool. no team make more than another. If no player or team would agree to that then they are just more interested in take our money. I'd be happy getting paid less than a million each year to play hockey who wouldn't? Everybody has seemingly forgotten what they're doing on the ice in the first. ITs fun and you can support yourself comfortably for 6 months of playing not bad. Go enjoy the summer ya know. Just on the brain tired of hearing this nonsense about money and salaries. I mean our core that we have are mostly drafted and I don't want to see anybody on the leafs go. But with the cap Nylander is probably traded very soon. Because no team is going to hold 4 x 10 miilion dollar players on the roster the way it is and that sucks.

  8. I'm a Leafs fan and I hate the Bruins with every fiber of my being for how many times we lost to them in the playoffs but Patrice Bergeron is the definition of what true Leadership looks like because he was all about team success. He talked the talk and he walked the walk. First ballot hall of famer.

  9. It's not on the players to care what the team cap structure looks like that's on management. I will never blame players for trying to maximize their earning potential.

If they do take a discount wonderful if they don't they don't have to

  10. There was a window to move on from one or two of these players. Shanahan chose to close it, and now the players have all the power.

  11. Players in all sports should look at the GOAT Tom Brady who always took paycuts and team friendly deals to win his 1st 6 Championships in New England!! This allowed the Team to spend money in other areas thereby helping the team get better quality players at key positions!!

  12. Matthews should just play out the contract. He will make top dollar. Toronto is just trying to guilt him out of money. It s his time to make the hay, the sun is shining for him. The leafs messed up by not trading Marner, before July 1st. Big mistake, blaming Dubas is useless, the Virus put the kibosh on his financial plan. Murray is another issue, the Leafs have star power, but they are cash poor. If any team is killed by this hideous cap, it is them. All that corporate money..pity

  13.
