Why did Scotty Bowman switch goalies every five minutes in this game?

The announcers at the beginning state that Bowman said he will be alternating goalies every five minutes and it looks like he does. Assuming this was the last game of the season ?

It was. Probably also the only time you’ll see a goalie change on the fly.

To establish dominance. And for pageantry/posterity.

This was April of 1992. He said he wanted both guys fresh for the playoffs. To accommodate that, he had them jumping off them bench to get net time throughout the course of the game.

Wendell Young said when he and Kenny Wregget told the guys in the room about it, no one believed them. Everyone laughed at them. So they started betting money on it. Sure enough, when Scotty accounted it pre-game, everyone lost their shit and had to pay up.

Then, they started pressing them to do moonwalks and high-five each other for more money into the pot. That didn’t happen, but I wish it had.

Not only was this the end of the season, it was after a 2 week work stoppage. The Pens were reigning Stanley Cup Champs and the Rangers won the Presidents Trophy in the 91-92 season. They battled the entire year and it was possible this was their last game playing each other.
