Soon obviously meant 24 hours.
Nikolai Kovalenko signed his ELC contract of two years which will come in at just under $900k AAV. Even though we won’t see the Avs top prospect until late in the season, one thing is for sure is that Avalanche fans will have their calendars circled for whenever he makes his debut, as the expectations are pretty high for the youngster.
Expectations are always high when it comes to Devon Toews, and ever since joining the Avs he has delivered. Now, one of the best value contracts will be ending after this season, and fans wants to know how the Avalanche will handle it? Do they trade him to get something back if they don’t feel like they can sign him? Or do they ride it out and take their chances next offseason?
Some Avalanche fans are already concerned about the Avs “window” of winning another championship closing. We discuss why we should not even be hovering over that panic button when it comes to the topic.

I think 7m X 5 is suitable
Thoughts while watching. Not sure who is expecting Kovalenko to be the next Kaprisov, but that's wishful thinking. I'm hoping for a middle six player who comes in about 50 points per season. Hope he exceeds it, but tempering the expectations.
On the open market and the cap going up next summer, Toews will most likely get offered a 7 year $9 mil per deal from some team. If the Avs were going to trade him it would have been at the draft last month when the return would have been the highest. The only way they trade him now is at the deadline if things have gone completely sideways and the playoffs are in serious doubt or a deep run is extremely unlikely due to injuries. I think their best shot at signing him to an extension is using that 8th year option to keep the AAV down to the $8 mil range give or take $500k.
I agree with Chris, Makar 100 points is the most likely of them. Kovalenko would depend on who he finds chemistry with when he gets here and how much trust he can earn from Bednar right away. I still do not see Malinski making the roster out of camp, but rather the first or second injury call up to get his debut.
Mikko and Nate are both comfortably in the top 15 players in the NHL right now. Last year proved that Mikko can carry the team when he needs to even without MacK in the lineup. I would give the edge to Nate because he's a true #1 center in the league where not every team has that true legit #1 center. Mikko is among the elite wings in the league and can fill in at center, but he is definitely more comfortable on the wing. When they split them up on different lines each one is capable of driving play on that line, and since they played together so long, they know they can always put them back together in a pinch and create the super line.
Hockey will definitely always be a very expensive game to participate in which is unfortunate. USA Hockey has been seeing incredible growth in girls hockey starting with the 1998 Winter Olympics, and now post pandemic where growth is exploding.
The Avs Cup window I see going for another 8 years through Mack's contract. The difficulty will be in getting Mikko and Cale signed to extensions after each of the next two seasons respectively.
The Vince Dunn deal really screwed the Toews comp.
Kovalinko could only sign a max of a 2 yr elc
The AVS front office will not be paying 7 or 8 million to Devon Towes. So this upcoming season will be the last season Toews wears a Avuniform. Mackinnon is an overall better player than Mikko. The Avs window to getting another cup has closed thanks to getting decent backup players over superstars .
Toews will be 30 this season , so I’d try giving him a 6 year contract at 7 millions, more than 6 years I wouldn’t do it cause of his age
I don’t have any expectations for Kovalenko but I am excited. Mostly due to his vast improvement last season under Larionov because it hints that he listens and learns which is what you want in a young talented player. Certainly don’t expect him to come to the Avs in March and take the league by storm but he has the potential to be a key player in seasons to come.
I think you can resign Devon and trade G. We can't have both and Behrens can replace G in the near future
It is possible that another team could offer Toews $9 for seven years but it would likely be a team in rebuild like the ducks or habs. The avs could match that with ~$7.8 for eight though and I don't think many people would complain too much about that. They definitely aren't trading him regardless
According to THG Jack Johnson is the avs most underrated player so maybe he plays 20 minutes per game this year 🤣🤣
