I think Dallas might be our ‘canary in the coal mine’ with respect to rebuilding in the Hubs and Kadri era. This article outlines how they did it.

Yeah it helps finding Heiskanen, Roberts and Oettinger in one fucking draft. Wouldn’t everyone like that.

    This is a fantastic article!

I love the description of what it means to “rebuild”. I think a lot of people don’t understand rebuilding and retooling.

Huby and Kadri are going to be integral pieces of our team to enter a rebuild period. Both are good players on long contracts which means they don’t have the luxury of jumping ship to a contender.

Now we need to draft some NHL ready young players to play with and take over for these guys down the road and hope that they stick around for a decade while the magic takes shape.

It’s easy – all you gotta do is find guys like Robertson and Hintz in the 2nd round and have a 39yo Pavelski scoring at a point-per-game pace.

It’s simple really, you just have an all time elite draft finding gems in every position all in one draft class and have them all break out as stars (pun intended)… it’s *so easy*, idk why everyone doesn’t follow the blueprint of hitting on every single pick in one draft to bounce back.

There’s literally no excuse to suck guys, just draft good players that the other 31 teams completely ignore because they don’t know puck.

I am generally tired of the semi-annual rebuild talk. Every time the Flames miss the playoffs, a large portion of the fanbase wants to sell off everything and start from scratch. These fans want us to stop being perpetually mediocre, but if the team was managed like they want we would be perpetually a bottom feeder.

    1. Wolf is as close to an Oettinger as the Flames have ever drafted.
    2. Pelletier, Coronato, Zary, Honzek, or the return from trading Lindholm or Hanifin could turn into really good top 6 forwards.
    3. Poirier or Morin could develop into really good top 4 defense men, and Kuznetsov is potentially a solid defensive defenseman at the NHL level
    4. Andersson, Weegar, Sharangovich, Dube, Mangiapane, and Kyllington are still in their prime and unlikely to decline any time soon.

With a good trade or if a later round draft pick unexpectedly lands, the Flames will be in a very similar position to Dallas.

But the thing is, Flames Ownership group doesn’t want a rebuild. They want a re-tool. So Conroy is redefining our “style” simple hard work, to hardworking with creativity (and speed). They just need to be similar to Carolina Hurricanes (minus Aho signing) and just sign a 2-3 year deal and move players to keep them competitive.
