TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger joins Bryan Hayes and Jeff O’Neill on OverDrive to give his take on Mike Matheson being suspended two games for his hit on Elias Pettersson.
People saying it's clean, how stupid are you? NO ONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUCKING HIT. Pettersson gets hit all the time. If it's clean he can get back up. His weight has nothing to do with the fact Matheson choke slammed him head first into the fucking ice. There is nothing clean or fair about that. To blame Pettersson's weight is stupid. Yeah he is easier to take down, but he doesn't fall head first when he falls due to a hit unless you grab him up high, and damn near flip him onto his head. If this happened to any of your team's players you'd all be calling foul. 2 games is fair.
So, based on the opinions here that this was a fair hockey play, we need to make aspiring hockey players choose between life in the NHL or likelihood of reasonable health for the rest of their lives. If you want to join the league, you must sign off on the possibility of being mentally damaged for life. I guess the really smart ones will choose a life without the NHL so they can survive to a ripe old age and enjoy their life fully. I know when I go to a hockey game it is to see the skilled guys, not the plodders. I know there is a need for players of many skill sets, but the days of pummeling an opponent into submission should be gone. If you want to see raw, brutish fighting, go watch UFC or the like. There, you do not have to put up with some skinny young lad with incredible talent, you can just remain in the days of the Neanderthal. Why do owners not lean on the league to protect the stars of the league? Why does the players' union not protect the players who paying the union for representation? Why are the people in the press who cover the game not standing up and demanding that the skill game be protected and promoted so it continues to support their position? Let us separate brutality from skilled sport. Playing in the league should be an honour that is revoked when behavior threatens the very future of the game, and that can be the backbone of the rule book. The league, the union, the press and the fans should not have to put up with this goonery, or even the ridiculous antics of the likes of Marchand who, for some reason, is still tolerated in the league. Hard competition does not preclude rough play or possibility of injury, but it does not need to include brutish, unsportsmanlike behavior. I'm a fan of the game of hockey, not of brute violence. Let's keep skill in the game.
The Vancouver Canuck team culture is a joke. The coach is as well, because he is responsible for the team culture that develops around these burgeoning rookies. If I was Elias Pettersson I would hold out next summer and sign somewhere else. If I was Brock Boeser I would do the same (see: Trevor Lewis–Brock Boeser). Nobody on the team did anything. What a joke!
Jeff O'Neil's demeanour and way he's dressed reminds me of like some high school football jock who thinks he's hot shit, but actually everyone hates him. He gets way too drunk at parties and everyone is just embarrassed.
Dude that was litterally getting pressed up against the boards while he had the puck and being thrown down with one arm. People acting like he picked him up and full on body slammed his head. I guarentee matheson plays on more of an edge than this all the time same with almost every other defenceman. One of their jobs is literally to grind down the other teams forwards and make them afraid to get in the corners. Thats what hockeys always been. The ONLY reason this play looked bad is because petterson has the body of someone in highschool. And it’s wrong for matheson to be suspended because the petterson can’t handle the physicality of the nhl.
2 days off of work. Now he has to watch TV.. This penalty is really strict. And it could hurt his goal stats for the yr. Next time u need a sic day– do body slam again/concussion. Meat heads.

Should be more. He went after a guy who didn't have the puck. Plus he suffered a concussion. Should be 25 games plus a hefty fine
