Hurling legend Davy Fitzgerald reviews Limerick’s historic All-Ireland hurling final win

Davy Fitzgerald breaks down what would happen if Kilkenny’s four-in-a-row team from the noughties played this current Limerick side.

John Kiely’s Limerick made history by equalling Kilkenny and Cork’s record of winning four All-Irelands in a row, and have the opportunity next season to go one better.

Waterford manager and hurling legend Davy Fitzgerald was in the studio for the latest episode of the GAA Hour and he was asked who would win between the two sides.

“I do believe that they are the best team I have ever seen playing – them and Kilkenny in the 2000s, them two teams stick out in my head as being the most consistent, as teams that dominated their era.

“Limerick and Kilkenny, if they were to play at their best, those two teams in those generations, so the mid-zeros to the Limerick teams now – I would love to see that game, it would be some game.

“They are two completely different styles. Kilkenny would have been very much direct, although they play very similar where they get loads of bodies back in midfield.

“That’s what both teams do, but I think Limerick probably work the ball a lot shorter, they’ll either shoot from midfield, or get it deep inside. Limerick will rarely put ball back down the half back line, they will bypass that no matter what the story is.

“It would be a great game but, probably Limerick would just edge it.”

There will be a few from that Kilkenny team who wouldn’t probably disagree with Fitzgerald on this one, but it’s impossible to call.

  1. We don’t need minor teams cutting up the surface and then it’s not at its best for the senior final. Especially if it’s wet.

  2. People were in the stadium before the game started. That's not the reason the jubilee team didn't have an audience. The 'crowd' was drinking & eating in the concourses. That won't change whether there is a 'minor game' of not.

  4. Tom Morrissey 'going down' happened very early in that break in the phase of play. KK had a free & Morrissey went down. He was being treated whilst TJ Reid was lining up the free & scoring. That takes approx 1min. I don't think it's fair to assume Morrissey going down was 'planned' or designed to disrupt the play as the timing didn't look to be timed to delay the game.

  5. Yes KK should have had a 65, but how is it a 2pt swing?
Limk had a puck out from the 'wide' & scored from the puck out.
Limk would have had a puck-out whether the 65 was scored or not.
At most it was a 1pt swing assuming TJ Reid would have scored.

  6. That 65 incorrect umpire call was karma for the umpire maby robbing Limerick of the 6 in a row in 2019

  7. Good lad Davy. Watched you hurl in Croke Park 1989 v. Offaly minors. They bate us (Down) by 5 points in the semi-final that Summer – I was marking (trying to, anyway) Johnny Dooley.

  8. Limerick survived by the skin of their teeth in Munster. Having escaped the Tigers of Munster, they fully deserve the All Ireland title.

  9. The future of hurling is in the hands of the young. If there is an All Ireland hurling final in the year 3000 AD, it will be due mainly to the enthusiasm, dreams hopes, idealism of youth.
Will Limerick or Clare win the All Ireland of 3000AD !!!!!! ?)

  10. I was a child when Limerick won All Ireland in 1973 and waited by whole life to see Limerick win just one All Ireland now since 2018 I have lived to see five, and by the look of them they have another two or three, my only regret is my Uncle who lived and breathed Limerick hurling died in 2008 and never got to enjoy this special period in Limerick hurling.
