ALEXIS LAFRENIERE OT WINNER REACTION

Alexis Lafreniere scored 1:37 into overtime, and the New York Rangers defeated the Calgary Flames 5-4 at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Lafreniere scored on the rebound of a one-timer by Mika Zibanejad, which was created off a 2-on-1 rush.

Zibanejad also scored twice, Filip Chytil had two goals, Artemi Panarin had two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves for the Rangers (28-14-8), who are 9-2-2 in their past 13 games.

Andrew Mangiapane and Blake Coleman each had a goal and an assist, Michael Stone and Tyler Toffoli scored, and Mikael Backlund had two assists for the Flames (24-17-10), who are 3-1-1 in their past five games. Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves.

Each team was playing its first game since Jan. 27.

Chytil gave New York a 1-0 lead at 5:37 of the first period. Kaapo Kakko banked the puck to Chytil who sped past Nikita Zadorov before scoring with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle.

Coleman tied it 1-1 at 10:25 when he banged the puck in after receiving a centering pass by Mangiapane from behind the net.

Chytil then scored on a breakaway at 2:02 of the second period to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead, intercepting a pass by Nazem Kadri intended for Noah Hanifin, before Calgary tied it 2-2 when Toffoli scored a power-play goal from the top of the left circle at 16:25.

Zibanejad gave New York a 3-2 lead at 19:46, scoring a power-play goal with a one-timer from the left side off a cross-crease backhanded pass by Chris Kreider.

Mangiapane tied it again 3-3 at 6:38 of the third period when video review determined the puck deflected off his skate at the right post and there was no distinct kicking motion.

Stone then gave Calgary a 4-3 lead at 8:41 when he stepped into the puck and scored on a slap shot from above the right circle off a drop pass from Backlund.

Zibanejad made it 4-4 at 12:55 when Panarin slid the puck in front from behind the goal line to Zibanejad who roofed it with a one-timer.
