The only new news here was which part of his hand was broke. If you were watching the Panthers in the playoffs, you knew his hand was broke, and he had surgery, and it was just a matter of how much pain he could play through when he returned after surgery. Paul Maurice even spoke about this.
Breaks like this usually take a screw or pin to align and fix the fractured region. Healing takes 2 weeks to achieve a beginning callus formation, 4 weeks to completely heal or at least stabilize. He had to have an external fixation device to prevent movement of the thumb otherwise the fracture is reinjured and he's out longer, likely into the SCF. (Not that he really showed up in a major way then anyway.)
