get show boys first and foremost A few things here Matthew's wants a 3 year deal at 13.5 short deals because he wants to see where the team will be.Easy answer no better than now because you guys eat all the money up. As for Willy 10mill a season it's a joke the highest maybe 9mill but I say the best case scenario is under 9 at 5 plus years. Mitch in my mind is a leaf for life I just like how he handles himself on and off the ice hell I go as far as saying the next caption of the team I don't believe Matthew's is a leader just my opinion
How many times do I have to say it. The leafs brass gives two fucks about winning a cup.
They sign these guys to these deals for name branding. To sell jerseys and corporate sponsorships.
If this team was run like Vegas. Non of the core 4 would still be here, and the team would be a serious contender. How many more years of this shit do we leaf fans have to go through.
I dont blame Willy for wanting to get top dollar this time. Hes put in his time and produced when it counts. If Matthews was a team player and cared about winning a cup he would come in at hometown discount and others would follow suit. Matthews gives this impression of big selfish baby and it is contagious. No facial expression or emotion during tough times in games. He would be the worst captain ever – only maybe behind Tavares.
Sebastian Aho has outproduced Matthews, Nylander, and Tavares in playoff points since Matthews' and Aho's rookie season(2016-2017). The only Leaf that has produced more in the playoffs since that time is Marner at 0.94 vs 0.92ppg. Leaf fans typically overvalue their players because they overemphasize regular season play…where the Leafs are typically elite…though those same players become extremely mediocre in the playoffs. Aho is also a career +20 playoff performer, while the only plus playoff performer for the Leafs is their best overall player…Mitch Marner at +9. Matthews is +/- 0, Nylander is a -1, and Tavares is a -9. The reason the Leafs stink in the playoffs is their star players don't produce post season points at a rate anywhere near their regular season pace…and aside from Marner, they're generally not great defensively either.
Statistically, Auston Matthews & John Tavares will continue harming the chances of the Leafs finally winning a cup…particularly after Matthews unjustifiably becomes the highest paid player in the league…despite being 42nd in playoff points per game in his career. Compared to guys like MacKinnon(1.30 playoff ppg and +32) Leon Draisaitl(1.57 playoff ppg and +10), and Connor McDavid(1.53 playoff ppg and +16)…Matthews is hot garbage after the first 82 games of each season. So keep right on talking about how elite the guy is and celebrate when he becomes the highest paid player in the league, but his next contract will be more of a poison pill than anything else imo.

Toronto players are world class Selke winners, each year the Toronto media says Matthew’s or Marner are best defensive players in league history, of course they are all worth more than McDavid…Marner and Matthew’s will win Selke awards every other year now Bergeron is retired! Nylander is the best playoff scorer in leafs history, he’s more clutch than Chris Drury or Gretzky in postseason! If I’m the leafs owner I demand they all get paid 14 million per season because “the cap is going up”. No such thing as a Leafs hometown discount even if you wore leafs Jammie’s as a kid.
Matthews had never scored less than 30 goals in the NHL, aho having only 4 30 goal season is not really comparable.
Aho is NOT worth 9.75 per year for 8 years, not even three or five.
Matthews is not a team player. He is a Leaf for one reason only. Blame it on Dubas for setting salary expectations so high. He gave away the bank on short term.
Matthew is for himself. He doesn't have heart!
Toronto pays players more to play here because everyone knows it's been 56 years since TO won a cup. No one wants to play here so you over pay players to play here .Plus when the fans complain it's like being under a microscope in TO , the media here is worse then any other team. How can VGK build a team in 6 years in the league to win a cup when it's been 56 for TO? SEA , FLO , also have built better teams and will win a cup way faster and CAR too. TO has had pathetic management that is a joke. Fire Shanahan and create a new personality.
It’s not different. Auston should be taking less this time around. If he’s not willing to take less then why should nylander? Austons suppose to be a leader for this team and by signing and taking less would show that he can lead by example.
Nylander should get 8 x 8…a wanna be center at best. Wingers should make less…guy is not Mark Stone either .
Extend Matthew's to the deal he deserves, 8 years 120 million and keep William Nylander as the rental player you would move on at the deadline. The team we have now is ready to take the division with home ice to the semis or better. Our future is built on a long sought-after Stanley Cup finals appearance our fans have believed in for decades. This is the best roster I have ever seen put together tinkering with the bottom 6 and defense close to the line may be in order but we should wait and see. Good luck fellas your fans are looking forward to training camp. ⏱️
This contract is appropriate for aho. It’s certainly no an underpay or an example of a player taking less money that’s for sure
