Vladimir Tarasenko Won’t Join the New York Islanders but Does Sign with a Rival Fighting for the POs

It was not surprising that Vladimir Tarasenko didn’t sign with the New York Islanders, but he did sign with the Ottawa Senators, a team the Isles will likely be fighting for one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference again this season.

Plus, five Isles prospects prepare to play in the World Junior Summer Showcase including Calle Odelius and Danny Nelson. We break down all five players and what to expect from them on today’s show.

And somehow, John MacLean is still has a job running the Isles power play despite how badly the team performed last season.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Shocking. Isles miss out on a guy that can score goals who instead signs with an eastern team on the rise. Nice one year deal for sens who can flip vt at tdl if needed. ross, pierre who vt could outscore in his sleep, and ltir clutterbuck could have paid for one vt. When will this shit ever end…

  2. Lamoriello never deviates from his philosophy Gil you know that. Tarasenko does not play defense , he has a bad shoulder and cannot check or hit. He is a SNIPER ONLY. This is LOU's decision. He must really be relying on Wohlstrom and maybe Maggi.

  3. Gil Can you find out when the Islandrs have their Prospect Camp . Maybe you can go and give us your insights.

  4. Perfectly said, Gil, it just doesn’t seem like us NY Islanders fans have much confidence or great expectations in this team when
there has been no big signings to address what the team needs to get better.
Need help with the power play/special teams, goal scorer, and solid offensive type defenseman that can skate with the puck very well like Nick Leddy, Denis Potvin, and Bobby Orr.

  5. 7:51 There it is. That's what I have felt the past 3 years with Yoda at the helm. He more often creates NEW problems he can't solve.
    1) Fails to hold on to Toews. We have been looking for a puck moving defenseman ever since, and STILL looking.
    2) Lou gives up pick to dump Leddy, our other puck moving defenseman, to the Wings. A couple of months later, the Wings RECIEVE assets from the Blues for Leddy. Yoda the genius?
    3) Loses the one guy who can be effective alongside Barzal, and we get nothing in return. Eberle wasn't a huge goal scorer, but we at least had one until Yoda fixed things. I bet 31 GM's still laugh about Yoda protecting Clutterbuck and losing Eberle to the Kraken, when the dummy had a chance to dump Bailey for free. The Kraken just may have chosen Bailey over Clutterbuck.
    4) How many big name scorers has Yoda had a shot at and whiffed? The list is pretty long.

  6. Last time I checked islanders competed for conference finals and played pretty well last playoff series
The negativity on Lou is typical for New York fans and media but does not make sense
We have a vision and a culture, if tarasenko didn’t fit then he didn’t, next!

  7. Hi Gil—here we go again! He spent his $$ on Charnin soft Engval and Mayfield and missed out on Tarasenko. I mean if a trade of Engval and Mayfield was on the table—would ya do it? I know I would. Know what Gil—I’m pretty fed up!! It’s one thing to go to the west coast—but a team your gonna fight for to get in to a playoff spot? Geez—-Wings get better—-Sens are better—-Devs way better—-I don’t even know what to say anymore. I’m sorry Gil—our 81 year old Gm has seen his better days. It’s discouraging to see teams around us get better and we get softer. Engval is as soft a player as I’ve ever seen. I think Bailey played rugged next to him. Only guy left is Debrusk and I like him! Bruins now have a major need at center and JG is a Bruin type player—-we need Debrusk’s 27 plus goals—-it’s the only move left. I doubt he will even get that done. Puck moving D Gill? They had one and let him go away. They don’t grow on trees—we know this. Sniper? How long has it been? He wasted Bailey’s money——Gil this GM simply sucks and ownership could care less about us fans. This is a business for them—-a real estate business. We are an above average team with the best Net in the NHL———hurts because ol timers deserve so much better. This 40 year drought can turn 50 real quick—-it is what it is but it didn’t have to be and that’s what irks me.

  8. Greetings team. I hope everyone is doing well. Stay safe and drink lots of water. Best of all, don't stay outside if you don't absolutely need to be. I'm okay with not getting Tarasenko, but there has to be some other kind of player the Islanders will have to get to truly be competitive this season. I hate saying this, but in Lou we must trust. He is the GM and there's nothing we can do about it.. at least for this coming season. Again, we'll have to wait and see. Thank you sir for another great episode. I, we, truly appreciate what you do. Looking forward to Monday's show. See you all then. Have a great weekend. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!
