RED WINGS vs. SENATORS vs. SABRES – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 30th, 2023

The NHL offseason feels like it has reached it’s deepest point, so what better time to jump into some heated intra-division rivalry talk…

Tune in as we start with news from across the NHL, including Patrice Bergeron retiring and how his Selke run compares to PAvel Datsyuk’s, & how the Boston Bruins’ outlook affects Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings (4:35). Also, Sebastian Aho & how his contract compares to that of Dylan Larkin, Matt Murray & the Maple Leafs causing some stir via LTIR, & Logan Cooley playing in the desert after all (12:35).

After discussing Tarasenko to the Ottawa Senators (22:05), we dive into the “best of the rest” debate in the Atlantic, how do the Detroit Red Wings stack up against the Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators, & Montreal Canadiens? We cover which team has the brightest future, where they may end up this next season, who has improved the most, & more (24:45).

Finally, a look at Joe Veleno being unsigned, how he stacks up against Marco Kasper, Elmer Soderblom, Jonatan Berggren, & other young guns, what his contract might be, & more (43:10) before we take your questions and comments during Overtime (46:30) – enjoy!

  1. I don't mind Sabres fans that much but Sens fans are some of the most delusional fans in the league

  2. What's funny in The Atlantic: Boston and Tampa Bay are arguably the only two teams that one could say did not improve. Every other team in the Division has gotten some measure better, or stayed at their same level from last year. It's going to be a dawg fight.

  3. I dont think its unreasonable to think any one of Detroit, buffalo or Ottawa ends up 3-4 in the division. Is it likely? No. Are there clearly better teams? Of course. But this is the first time that all the expected top teams have questions. Tampa's depth and age, Boston losing big pieces, Toronto added some good players but I dont Iike their depth, d-core or goaltending. Florida had a great Stanley cup run after almost missing the playoffs all together.
I think the division is wide open, its gonna be a dogfight,
and will be that way for years.
