ERIK KARLSSON CONFIRMS TALK WITH MAPLE LEAFS: TRADE?

In today’s video, I discuss the recent article where Erik Karlsson reveals that he’s spoken to a number of NHL teams about a trade, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. Karlsson also says he’s spoken with Kyle Dubas and Jason Spezza in Pittsburgh, the Carolina Hurricanes, and Seattle Kraken. Will new Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving bring him to Toronto?

  1. Pretty sure it was CJ who said that the Sharks would be willing to make Karlsson an 8-9 million dollar player if the package was good enough and they weren't able to unload his entire contract.

But, I'm assuming the Sharks are probably going to want a roster player like Nylander, a prospect like Robertson, Minten or Voit and maybe picks the Leafs don't really have, etc in order to do that. And the Leafs would probably want to use the same trade to try and get rid of Murray to better fit what's left of EK's cap, which could cost them more (unless they buy him out).

There's a blockbuster trade there that has a slim chance of actually happening, but like you said – is that fit even right?

  2. I would not take karlsson at all on Toronto .. cap .. age.. is this version karlsson legit or was last year a unicorn season ?

  3. Karlsson is just simply to expensive for the Leafs . Even if the Sharks ate some of his salary it still wouldn't make any sense . I'd rather overpay Willy than trade for Karlsson but that's just me !

  4. He’s pretty rich for the cap- strapped leafs. It would be nice, but it’s not going to happen.
    But a person can dream…………….👀😏😎🤘

  5. I think a lot of people are overlooking what an unusual season Karlsson had last year. This is an 11.5 mil player starting the downside of his career with a serious injury history. Even with a bit of salary retention, 8-9 mil for a player like that isn't a risk I'd be comfortable with. Additionally, I don't think the Leafs really have what the Sharks would be looking for. They'll want picks and prospects. And while we have a few prospects, regular season success has emptied the cupboard a bit there and we need them. If Treliving has been putting out feelers, I like that though. It's part of due diligence. No harm in taking a look at it.

  6. Unless there is a MASSIVE amount of retention there is no way the Leafs should accept a Karlsson trade. We've had enough trouble with 10+ million dollar players these last 6-7 years.

  7. Unless San Jose does 40% retention, together with other pieces moving out of Toronto, ie Murray &/or Nylander or others, the cap issues would be insurmountable. Is this Norris trophy season for Karlsson a one-off last hurrah, or is there more elite production to come? Is it worth rolling the dice on a 33 year old, as even with 40% retained, he's 6.9M aav for 4 years & will be 37 in the last year? Risky move for a commodity they already have in Rielly & Klingberg. Maybe Klingberg goes, unless he's got a NTC for his one year deal. I know Bertuzzi does. I thought Tree was into big, nasty, physical D, because Erik ain't that whatsoever.

  8. Actually, if one thinks about it, the trade for Karlsson makes the most sense only if the top pairing for the Leafs is being completely revamped. IE…Morgan Rielly is leaving. Rielly is a tire fire defensively and decent offensively and Karlsson is pretty much the same…save right handed and significantly better offensively. TJ Brodie gone, Morgan Rielly gone, Karlsson added and the top pairing becomes McCabe and Karlsson.

Just spitballing on how this could possibly work with Rielly and Klingberg already under contract.

Edit: …and can we PLEASE stop calling Erik Karlsson a "great defenseman". He's not…he's a great offenseman. Defensively he's always been consistently below average and last season he was truly awful defensively. Just like Karlsson winning the Norris, it's incredibly dismissive of actual defensive talent…like Jacob Slavin.

  9. Subscribed, not quite to 2K yet 😅 EK65 = Willy Styles + Matt Murray + 3.5 mil retained to make Toronto a “win now” team, I would argue that a proven Nylander is better than a 1st/2nd round picks for the Sharks who’s window is opening up in 2-3 years with the past few years high draft picks!!
