Willy's 100% worth $9 mill for 8 year.
SALARY CAP
I love Nylander as an offensive forward. He has otherworldly skills when he puts his mind to task & therein lies the problem. People go on & on about the 'core 4' vis-à-vis the amount of money they take up against the cap. Nylander wants 10M+ & in the absence of a Matthews or Marner, I'd think about it, but the downside of Bill is his continued tepid commitment to playing meaningful & reliable D. The Leafs will miss his offence but I want someone playing in the top 6 that has some offensive upside, but with snarl & bite. They have 4 extremely talented guys all wired the same way basically, so the argument is, one of them needs to go for a different kind of player & my vote is Nylander. Tree may of course, may have a different plan in mind.
Marner may end up being the one to go…..IF Tree even is considering trading one of them. He MAY decide to give these guys ONE MORE CHANCE at it and if its a bust again in the playoffs, then all bets are off.
Interesting stat assessment: there are only 3 players in the NHL who have positive 'net' penalties, over 50% success on face-offs, have 40+ blocked shots, 50+ takeaways, 70+ hits & 80+ points. They are McDavid, Crosby & Matthews. You'll never see Nylander's name on such a list. That's why you don't trade Matthews. Where the f*ck do you find another player like him. He has scored the most goals of anyone in the NHL since he came in as an 18 year old in 2016 at 299 (Ovechkin has 297, but in 27 more games). He scored 40 this year with a nagging hand issue, plus another 5 G + 4 A vs Tampa in round 1 & 60 goals the year before, so some of you think the 'smart' move is to trade him. The only reason to trade him is if he won't extend. Period.
In a vacuum, Nylander at $9M x 8 isn't a problem. The problem is Dubas royally fucked up the internal cap and we are now left with four players we can't really live without but don't show up in the playoffs. Trading one of them is extremely risky but I don't see a way around it anymore. You can't keep rolling the dice with these guys. We have a big enough sample size to know it won't work next April. I still see this as too much of a Dubas team, meaning I think Treliving will make a big move at some point.
Lets not forget that when Nylander signed his last contract, he was a hold out until December, then once he joined the club, he was out of shape and everyone was making excuses for him for the next three months, before he was even noticed on the ice!
I think your tax comparison is incorrect. Most, if not all, processional athletes in the major leagues open up corporations and so the taxes they pay are very different that what you may assume. Also, it is also possible that you pay taxes based on where you play, ie road games which makes the math even more complicated. To add to the complexity, American players may also need to pay taxes to USA gov as an expat when working abroad. Rest assured these multimillionaire players have great accountants who know how maximize the amount the players get to keep.
I would keep AM, and trade marner and nylander for grittier players
If you bring up taxes, then you also have to bring up endorsement money. Leaf players have way more opportunities for endorsement deals than basically every other market
I get the whole, then what. But you're ignoring the elephant in the room.
Regardless if you keep the core 4 or trade some of them. This team will be worse from last year.
You keep them giving raises. There is no money to build a decent team. We all know this core will never have what it takes to win.
You trade them. It will be some time till the players and assets they get back start to gel.
Either way, this team will take a step back this year 100%
The tax situation sucks for Canadian teams. I wonder if the league has ever considered having a higher cap in Canada to even the actual take home money for players, otherwise it’s not a level playing field for attracting players who are motivated one way or the other by a significant pay cut in tax. All that aside, I’m not convinced we can build a deep winning team with so many players on high cap hit salaries, as much as I don’t wanna see any of them wear anything other than a Leafs jersey, someone has to go so the team can get better overall. No matter who goes, the leafs are losing major talent, and we can only hope that it’s replaced elsewhere in the team, like a top D or goalie.
Salary cap should be adjusted based on tax – it is an insane advantage for certain markets.
Do we remember who Nylanders agent is? They're gonna start 10m+
You can't always get better in a deal. Sometimes you have to settle for the best deal possible. Nylander's agent put us through the ringer during his first contract negotiation and he isn't going to do us any favours this time around. Better get some assets rather than losing him for nothing.
Imo the talk should be about mathews he is a tremulous talent but tends to disappear when most needed also he will be the most return and free up the most cap
If they give Matthews 13+ m for anything under 5 years and then they end up having to trade Nylander because he's going to want to be paid too. It's going to be such a rough season
You have to take what you can get Andrew or you lose him for nothing next year. Are you forgetting Willy, Mitch and Auston hold all the cards. You will not get better on talent for sure for any of these 3, but you need to get stronger, bigger and tougher. Willy will get $10 Mil + on Toronto or another team, trust me.
So "net" salary differential means Willy should get $12 Mil per using that argument. You're actually arguing against yourself on this Andrew. Makes no sense.
One thing i would point out, the players all have have very smart finacial guys looking after them,to minimize the tax hit they take, and to make sure they get the maximum amount from salary, and maximum for life after hockey, so USA or CAN the salaries probably even up,there is nothing that can be done about the difference in the cost of living, that is what it is.I have no idea what will happen with WN, but i am sure one of the big salaries will be moved out because the leafs paying well over half the cap on only 5 players is not going to get them where they want to go, and unfortunately the cap is not rising enough to keep pace with the ever increasing salaries.
Andrew PILL and COCKY!!
Trading Nylander would be about the dumbest move the Leafs could make, so there's at least a 50% chance it'll happen.
Andre puke,,shut up,ur zzzzzzzźzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzz.
Auston needs to take less than what he’s making rn. So you’re telling me drai didn’t take a paycut?? In what sense does Auston deserve 14? Mack signed with term and he’s shown he can be a horse in the playoffs. If Auston wants short term I have no problem with that but i wouldn’t be paying him 13-14. I’d give him 10 for 4 years if that’s the path he wants to take. Another example to be compared to is OVIs contract. Best goal scorer the league has ever seen. Has a cup on his resume as well
When guys bring up taxes they always fail to mention that all players get paid in USD meaning Tavares' money is worth 35 percent more then Kucherovs as he resides in Canada so you're right it isnt a fair comparison, Tavares' is a hell of a lot more and you also have to factor in these guys all have accountants that fix it in a way these guys pay minimal taxes as a lot of it is "bonuses" hence why the leafs front loaded all of these deals.
Change of subject
If you want a younger luke schennwhy are we not talking about Arber Xhekal. I think this would be an excellent discussion
