In this clip, McFarland explains the fundamentals of attacking on the rush and why it’s critical to always work on the basics.

“I’ve always believed as a coach, your fundamentals will drive your structure and team play. So if you don’t have good fundamentals…you’re not going to be able to have succes.

This fall, McFarland will enter his second season as an assistant coach with Seattle and fifth NHL season overall; McFarland previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers and one with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Before joining the Kraken, McFarland had two separate tenures with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs. During his first tour with Kingston, his teams made three straight playoff berths and set a franchise record for points in a season, finishing in first place in the Eastern Conference in the 2015-16 season. He returned to the Frontenacs in the 2020-21 season as both the Head Coach and GM.

McFarland has also represented Canada on multiple occasions, including leading the U18 team at the 2016-17 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
