What players should the Capitals target to help this team?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan is joined by Jesse Courville-Lynch of The Hockey Writers. In the episode they talk about the moves the Caps have made in free agency and some names that Brian Maclellan should target Jesse Puljujarvi is a name mentioned by Jesse as a potential depth move by the Capitals. Vladimir Tarasenko is another name the Capitals should circle and try to go after. He would help give the Caps some much needed goal scoring. Later they talks about the draft and if the Caps selected the right players. In the last segment they talk about Evgeny Kuznetsov’s comments and what they mean for Kuzy and the Capitals.

  1. A big no to Puljijarvii and Tarasenko. We need more pace. Logan Couture may be fine, gritty center with skill.

  2. On the Ryan lenard prospect day highlights you see him goofing off woth mirochencko. And man caps have a bright future i think. Miro. Hendrix lap, conner mchiceal protas. Lenard . Hunter shepherd. Alexy alexev. The next 2 seasons i dont have cup aspirations but 3-4 years form now things look bright.

  3. Obviously I’m not an analyst but I’ve yet to see why people are pushing for these older vets. The caps could be sitting at $3.6mil if not for Edmunds and Maxx. Just because you have the space doesn’t mean you have to spend it on over the hill vets who you rely on a hope and a prayer. It’s taking up space for a young guy and money. I’ll say it again I’d rather be bad figuring out what the caps have in these young guys we constantly hear about than be bad with vets still wondering what these young guys have.

  4. Couture is an interesting option for Kuznetsov 1-for-1. Couture's value is probably higher, but you gotta imagine SJS would be very compelled by the prospects of liberating all that cap space 2 years early and not having to retain a cent on Couture's deal.
From the Caps perspective, Couture's deal expires one year passed the conclusion of Ovechkin's contract when the team inevitably will hit the rebuild switch, so cap space should not be an issue at that point.
