Sabres catching up to the Leafs in the Atlantic

Next up as we break down the Atlantic Division is the Toronto Maple Leafs. How likely are the Leafs to re-sign both Auston Matthews and William Nylander? Were they able to replace the losses of Ryan O’Reilly and Michael Bunting this offseason?

Plus, Sneaky Joe talks Matt Murray as an idea for the Sabres, who is likely to be bought out by the Leafs. And how close is the gap between Toronto and Buffalo?

  1. Sabres need some sandpaper, Greenway ain’t gonna cut it. The Leafs bulked up on grit with Bert and Reaver. Overall I like the direction the Sabres are taking with Adams being patient , I dont think we are done yet.

  2. bro must of glossed over the fact that Elliotte has said multiple times that Matthews is going to be signing a 3, 4 or 5 year extension with the Leafs at some point this summer. And the Leafs are really confident to get a deal done LMFAO. And Marner said yesterday that Auston AND Nylander want to stay in Toronto.

  3. Toronto, based on the rosters today, are likely to win the division. Once Florida get healthy around Christmas, they will challenge them. However the Leafs need a goalie with Samsonov unsigned. Getting under the cap is a major issue for them.

Not sure they are going to do much better in they playoffs, even though Boston & Tampa have regressed, Florida are a better playoff team.

I think we maintained the gap to Toronto, but I think they will start to regress a little as we improve next summer.

  4. What is this silly topic? Leafs are contending for the cup. Sabres are contending for a playoff spot… Its a big difference.

  5. Leafs former GM did them zero favors. He left behind a total mess. Core 4 thinking is trash. I cant wait til they max them out lol😅. Sabres are in my opinion leaps & bounds ahead of the leafs and add in the bruins into that conversation.

  6. With you re: the Bertuzzi & Domi signings, but Klingberg has been hot garbage since leaving Dallas. Terrible defensively and underwhelming offensively. Terrible signing that's fortunately only for a single year.

  7. O'Reilly just didnt wanna pay those canada taxes. Same contract but he will make more in a less taxed state.

  8. smashing the Leafs is a pleasure
    historically our Sabres have overall
Let's get back to that consistently again

  9. We thought the Bruins would miss the playoffs last year. Didn’t happen. Won’t happen this year either.

  10. In the next 3-5 years, Buffalo, Detroit, and Ottawa are going to be fighting for top spot in the Atlantic

  11. Sorry folks… Although I am a Leafs fan, I'm also a minor Sabres fan (because having a strong Lake Ontario rivalry is something we haven't seen in generations)! So here's the facts regarding both clubs as I see it:

1st – The Sabres ARE better on paper than last season (so far), but the problem with the Sabres has NEVER been the available talent on the team… there's something sinister about the 'culture' in Buffalo that puts players in the wrong mindset. Count on another season where the Sabres are one of the hottest teams starting off the first 10-12 games, then taking the rest of the season off… I wish it weren't so, but history is a strict teacher.

2nd – The Leafs are BETTER as a group of forwards (thank God for Domi & Bertuzzi), but WORSE on defense & goalie (and possibly even worse than projected if bad blood starts to form between Samsonov & the Leafs during arbitration)! They desperately need another 1a goalie!

3rd – The Sabres in the short run will be ahead of the Leafs. The Leafs WILL be keeping Matthews (of course) but will be forced to trade Nylander (hopefully for a goalie and some prospects to undue the damage Dubas caused us)…

Sorry my Sabres brothers & sisters, I think both teams are going to be stretched in different ways, with the Sabres not making the playoffs and the Leafs getting in. Although the Leafs will make the playoffs (likely as 2nd in the division) it's going to be another first round exit.

  12. Murray had his chance. The only way I would want him if Toronto was paying to get rid of him. I rather see the Sabers pick up a better goalie or let the trio play and see if more than one can rise to the top.

  13. Its kind of wild that the Leafs have arguably gotten better, or at least tougher, and people are saying they are falling in the rankings. I wouldn't be surprised if they come in 2nd or 3rd in the Atlantic, but I highly doubt anyone is passing them this season compared to last.
