With the current prospects pool at Defense, I don’t see where Norlinder could fit. I was wondering if you guys think he will get a last try with the big team this upcoming season or it’s already over for him?

It’s a really good question. I think he’ll get his audition at some point in the season, given injuries. That will help him play up his value. If they can trade him for a moderate return, they’ll do so, but there’s a strong possibility that he’ll walk to UFA when all is said and done. A smart team would do well to take a chance on him, if that’s the case.

If injuries happens i could see him have a stint if management don’t want to take away younger prospects from significant minutes in Laval if they are not deemed fully ready for a try in MTL yet.

This combined as someone else mentionned to increase Norlinder value in a future trade.

We lost too many prospects for nothing this summer. Shueneman, leskinen, Richard, etc. Not that we lack prospect but still.

Norlinder was mostly overhyped because the medias have nothing else to do. Sure, the kid could make the team or a team but he will probably never make a Top 3 steady dman in the NHL. Probably be a add on in a trade.

He’ll have a good pro career… back in Sweden

95% chance he’s a bust, 5% chance he can improve and play some NHL games as a 6/7D

Needs a redemption season and will get packaged to make room

I think you just leave him in the AHL for another year and see if there’s progression there. The kid has some very nice tools and is struggling to put them together and have a healthy season. This past season was actually the first time in a long time where he played a full-ish season for the same team.

Still need at least 1 season in the AHL and might become a Marc Andre Bergeron type of defensment without the shot and more of a playmaker aspect to his defensive game defensemen 5-6 that can get into the powerplay

The thing with defenseman is any of them can figure it out at any time. He could be 28 then boom hes a middle pair guy. If he gets sent to europe though, thats game over.

  10. He’s just 23 and only had 1 season in North-America.

There’s zero rush or internal pressure to decide his fate now.

If you want a rebuild and want Laval to develop players, you can’t “give up” on prospects after just one season of development in your org.

  11. Norlinder will be given his chance in Laval. As fast as the fanbase was to pump his tires the fanbase is now fast to write him off after a couple of challenging seasons (injury and transition to North America). Odds are stacked against him right now due to his position on the depth chart but he will play with quality teammates and get significant time on the PP in Laval.

And if he performs well, he will get a chance to crack a lineup somewhere. Plenty of players bounce around from team to team in the AHL looking for their chance (e.g. Lias Andersson). And if he can’t make it, he will head back to Sweden in a couple of years.

I think we as fans often fall into the trap of assuming where a player is on the depth chart is where they are going to stay. We also make the assumption that development is a steady upward trajectory when it is far from it.

Norlinder fits where ever he ends up. It would be surprising, but what if he shows up to camp and is lights out and Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj all take a step back in their development. Then he jumps to the top of the depth chart. Nothing is set in stone. He’ll compete for a spot and if he proves himself to be an NHLer, then he will be. If he should be in the NHL but gets blocked due to other players deserving it more, then that’s a good problem to have. He either goes to the AHL until there is injuries (which there will be) or he is eventually traded.

Personally, I think he’s a good prospect but he tops out as an in-betweener. Might not be an NHLer, but still a valuable asset to have in the organization.

Upside in the NHL is a depth defenseman, if all goes well. Good chance he ends up back in Europe sooner rather than later though.

  14. OkAnything4877

Magnus Nygren 2.0, exact same kind of hype as well.

  15. He will decide his own fate. Want to be in the show? Make your damn spot! If not, you don’t deserve it.

This is his last year being waivers exempt. It’s an important year for him. I’m not sure he’ll get any NHL time, but maybe if there are injuries.

You can say this about 10 guys in the organization. To make it in this league, you have to earn a spot. If he’s better than reinbacher, barron, harris and others at training camp or if we happen to have 3-4 injured d-man and he has a good start in laval, why couldn’t he get a chance? Kovacevic is 26 and got waived and out of nowhere he earned a spot here. Things change fast.

Edit: I’ve never seen him play and I’m pretty sure 95% of people saying he has no chance here also never seen him play. Fact is he’s young and has talent.

  18. eriverside

He’ll be in Laval as long as he’s good enough.

If he has a breakthrough, and he’s a better option than the guys we have on the team, he’ll get promoted. But until he does there’s too many young guys ahead of him. Which is great for the team, but not for him.
