Montreal Canadiens acquire Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith from the Penguins in the Erik Karlsson trade

Inside a special bonus Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens got in on the Erik Karlsson trade with the San Jose Sharks and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Kent Hughes was more than willing to act as a third party and ended up collecting a small fortune for his efforts at the end of the day.

When the dust had settled Montreal had acquired prospect Nathan Legare, a 2025 second round pick from the Penguins, goalie Casey DeSmith, and former Hab Jeff Petry, while they send Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick to the Sharks and Penguins respectively. Scott does his best to break down the new names, and old faces joining the Habs, and discusses why the departing names open the biggest window for young players in the rebuild.

The question remains though, is this another huge win for Kent Hughes? While the Penguins landed their White Whale in Erik Karlsson, the Canadiens made out extremely well. Scott makes the case for this being a huge win thanks to freeing up space for young forwards, but also how Hughes can make it an all-time deal if he can clear the logjam on defence next.

  1. Jeff Petry is a gaffe machine. To be flipped as fast as possible so he don't set foot on the Bell Center rink. The Habs need a washed-out 35-year-old D like they need a big toothache.

  2. yall did well, hate we lost Matheson to yall and wish Poehling stayed but that trade was a complete disaster for us. i think Matheson will break out now that he's healthy. don't know if petry is excited to come back to yall or not but if he sticks around best of luck will sorta miss him but not the contract

  3. Petry was one of the more offensive d man we got in stanley cup final run and we don't have righthanded d man that much. He wanted out because of the covid restriction and he never get the chance to play for matin st-louis

  4. I'm confused by that trade. I'm not saying I don't like it, I'm extremely surprised that Montreal wasn't in Petry's no trade list.

  5. If Petry is inclined to come back, as he wanted out because of covid restriction in the province. I'd rather move Savard out. Petry at 35 is still more mobile and versatile. He'd be a great role model for Barron.

  6. Guhle – Petry
    Matheson – Barron
    Harris – Savard
Xhekaj (play him in games against physical teams & rivals)

This looks GOOD to hold us over until Hutson & Reinbacher make the team

  7. We acquired 4 assets that they can still flip for more assets vs Hoffman and Pitlick(2 guys that had virtually no value) another master move! Love this new management team!!! ❤

  8. It's hilarious how excited fans are to be rid of Hoffman. One year of Hoffman for two years of Petry isn't a good deal unless Petry is flipped.

  9. W….a great big W. frees up 2 roster spots for younger forwards by trading two unmovable players in Hoffman and Pitlick. HuGo should be able to trade Petry for assets and I’m guessing that Allen may also be on the move and Desmith would be Monty’s backup. The trade gets a big A+ from me.

  10. Everyone is in love with Kent Hughes 😂😂😂 same people hated him at the 2023 draft and now he’s a godsend? Pulling off amazing moves?…. I’ve always believed in Kent Hughes and the direction he and Jeff Gorton go and it’s funny to see the same people that were hating on management at the draft loving them now…. 🤦🏼‍♂️

  11. Hughes is like Lex Luther or Professor X His plan for rebuilding the Canadians was long in play before he was G.M for the Canadians! As an Agent and either repping or his importance on players character is phenomenal. The number of former first rounders he has required to go to the MSL player recovery program!

  12. asking for owen pickering would be asking for the moon. it's an unbelievable deal as is. desmith and petryare great trade bait. they can waibe petry and no one will take the salary, which would give them time to work something out if he isn't traded before the season starts. either primeau or desmith are being traded. now trade gallagher armia and there is capspace and lots of room for the youth

  13. i still hate thenewhook trade. andrew chrustall was there and said to be a top three offensive talent. needed wortk on his skating and consistency but he's the sleeper ofthe second round.

  14. We got desmith, matheson, petry at 25% retention, second and fourth round pick for Ryan poehling 😅
Plus got rid of hoffman W wughes

  15. I know that this guy (Nathan Légaré) having a french name could be a challenge to pronounce for english-speaking folks, but just to point you in the right path, Légaré is pronounced "Lay-ga-ray", in English phonetics. 🙂

  16. Heineman will be the guy making the team, bigger, more physical and a better scorer than Ylonen

  17. Hughes is a magician. He has this insane ability to make amazing trades…Now lets move ARMIA…😅

  18. Would you do the following trade?

    Montreal Canadiens:

    Jeff Petry (50% retained), Jesse Ylönen, Jake Allen, Flames 1st 2025, Avalanche 2nd 2024, & Edmonton 7th 2024

    Maple Leafs:

William Nylander, TJ Brodie, & Dennis Hildeby

  19. I really don't like Petry but it still is a big W for mtl.

If Petry plays half as good as he did in mtl a couple of years ago, we could get some assets at the trade deadline…hoffman I doubt it.

  20. if you look at cap friendly you would see montreal has 14 fowards so no there is no room for a prospect?????????
