I think Xhekaj goes in on the bottom pair. He brings a presence unique to what everyone else does
Buildthatpaywall1991
Petry isn’t going to stay.
Grouchy-Bug5223
I’ll be really sad if Xhekaj isn’t starting this year tbh
Jpnator
Oof, not with Matheson… He needs a big defensive dude next to him.
So Xhekaj or Ghule.
guy_smiley66
Savard is not a top 4 defenseman. Matheson is. So is Petry.
Like Jordie Benn, I give Savard props for filling in during injuries and playing big minutes above expectation, but we’re really going to need one of the young defensemen to step up this year. It’s a deep pool, so there are good chances that one will.
Habsfan_1984
I will be shocked if Petry plays a single game with the Habs next season.
ParanoidMarvZark
Petry is 35. If he performs well, he’s moving. I’d be surprised if he goes before the start of the season. Savard is a similar cap hit and easier to move IMHO.
While we’re at it, I’d be very surprised if Mailloux manages to suit up for the Habs. That news cycle just isn’t worth it. My bet is he’s packaged off to Philly or Carolina.
Barron would be playing 2/3 of the games and when he’s not Savard would take his place by Matheson and Kovy would slot in the 3rd pair. X would replace Harris for more physical matchups. It’s not ideal but in a sense it’s good, our D are still young so there’s lots to learn for them when they’re not playing and it limits their ice time so they’re less likely to get injured. If Jeff is happy in Montreal, then he would be a great mentor for Guhle.

I think both petry and matheson still have gas in the tank and have always been a fan of one D with experience, one kid for a pairing if you can swing it.
For the first time in a long time, we can swing it.
So split the matheson/petry duo.
Provided we dont flip him (petry) right away.

Arber has an underrated skill set that will get him in the line up (on top of his toughness)

We don’t need Petry and he would only slow the development of our young D corps. He will 100% be shipped at a bargain price before the beginning of the season.
PofolkTheMagniferous
This graphic should really have 8 D in it. You don’t go into a season with 6 D. Injuries happen, you need some depth.

Really annoyed to see Xhekaj and Barron out of the lineup when they should be developing.
A bit of a log jam when you consider Hutson and Reinbacher

I’d much rather have the Sheriff in over Harris.

I would trade Savard and move Kovacevic if needed, as I think he has a super low ceiling.
I find the amount of people butt hurt over Petry so amusing. He was a good Habs player for a long time. He couldn’t see his family during Covid and wanted to be gone.
This isn’t really shocking or something to shit on a player over. And the funniest part is I’m sure a ton of the people who are butt hurt over Petry would be the first to defend Drouin and tell people to not dump on him over his mental health.
I hope Petry stays and is paired with one of the young guys.
Guhle Petry
Matheson Baron
Harris Kovacevic
Xhekaj

I just want a couple games with a Matheson – Petry pairing. Just for the memes. Trade Petry, Savard away for max value.

I don’t think Kovacevic is going to be anything other than a bottom pairing guy.
We have Reinbacher, Mailloux, Hutson as prospects that are almost certain to be NHLers. Guhle is already played top pairing time. Harris, Barron and Xhekaj have already played at the NHL level.
That’s already 7 defenseman, with four of them having serious top 4 potential. We don’t really to saving any bottom pairing guys for the future, because worst care scenario is a couple of those 7 plateau or don’t completely meet expectations and they can just play bottom line minutes.
I get having Kova and Wideman as 2-way guys that can fill in for injuries, which we seem to get a plethora of, but I don’t think we should ever be prioritizing their ice time over any other options listed and even aiming to develop him into a role player, because like I said we have plenty of how players who’s potential floor is his ceiling.
I also get have stop-gap players until the younger ones are ready, but now we have 3 or 4 of those here, and let’s be honest Savard, Matheson and Petry will all be better in the line up then him. So tl;dr I think he should sit in the press box unless there’s injuries and X or Barron should be playing unless management thinks they’re better developed in Laval. But I think this is the year to give them minutes while expectations and pressure are low.
FlashyChapter
With each passing minute since the trade, I’m more and more convinced that there’s a 0% chance Petry plays another game for Montreal. Management haven’t called a press conference about the trade and neither Petry or his wife have acknowledged the trade on social media. He gone.

Id really be suprise if savard is on the top 4 again this year. My guess is this guy will fall off and be more efficient on bottom 6 minutes

Barron and Harris are both ahead of Xhekaj, and if you’re going to move a veteran Dman, why not Savard?
