The fact that Hoffman has to play in SJ after the fiasco with his girlfriend a while ago is poetic justice to me
Trade Petry with 50% retention (2.34aav$ for 2yrs) + a B prospect (Ex: Norlinder) and you could probably get solid value coming back to the habs.
So on the same page as you here, MTL won that hard 😅
i agree. pitts is still one injury away from missing the playoffs, sj got a mid to late first rounder. if malkin or crosby or karlsson goes down with injury, they arent relevant til 2035 again.
Nathan is a body only. Will never ever see NHL,… not noticeable in AHL (poor skater), just a hometown boy thrown in to apprise the local press.
Mid trade for the 3 teams. KH is being overrated at this moment obv his making good things and bad but lol his being more overrated tham Yzer lately (and yzerman clears overall). Now with the trade mtl is smart but thats it, now SJ can dump Hoffman and Granlund for 2 2nds maybe to contenders. And Pitt gets Karlsson (but i still think is a mid move for a 1st an a lot of money, this only makes the rebuild step back 1 or 2 years. But i can understand the move having crosby malkin letang, but i dont like it)

Si je comprend bien Hugo a a bien voulu rapatrier Petry tellement contre leur sentiment que Pittsburgh et San Jose devaient accepter une offre qu'ils ne pouvaient pas refuser. I would'nt mind Petry in the line-up. Coming back home.

So the Habs "win" this trade… if they flip Petry. Got it.
If Petry stays, why would he be on the bottom pairs? Habs are crowded with bottom pair D. If he stays, he's easily their best RD
This doesn't make up for the Michkov blunder…but it was a great trade for the Habs
clearly the winner is pittsburg because they got the best player. that to me makes them the winner. montreal on the other hand didn't go into this trade to be winners, they joined this trade to be rid of salary in the name of hoffman. they picked a piece ( petry ) who could serve them or they could trade him. i think this was strictly a cap move for them. they need the cap space and they accomplished that.
Karlsson is the only player of value in this deal. If Petry could be flipped easily, the trade wouldn't have needed to involve Montreal.
The Penguins actually pulled off a trade fans always suggest…trading all our bad players for their good player.
even just the fact that the forward core now has more space for younger players like Slafkovsky and Ylonen to get more ice time
Casey grew up a Habs fam if I'm not mistaken, so it seems Dubas did right by him with the trade and Montreal gets a goalie who has had solid 1B years, playing for his childhood team, at a good price… could be a great deal.

I dont think it's a good trade for anyone, Habs got Petry, who JUST asked for a trade out of Montreal, ya ya, he's an asset, im sure teams are beating down Hughes and Gorton's doors for Jeff petry… It IS good that the Habs were able to unload Hoffman in the deal, that's the only part i liked. And as San Jose got basically nothing for Karlsson, and Pittsburgh who got the coveted prize! Erik Karlsson, but which Karllson are they getting? If u dont count last year, he hasn't played a full season since 2015 i believe it was. like he was missing minimum 30 games a season, and $10M for a 33 year old aging D man who has one full season out of the last 10 or so, seems a bit much, in my opinion EVEN if he got 100 points last year. Im thinking about sustainability. Im just saying he can't score 100 points, if he only plays 45 games, or in that area. Im surprised the Habs didnt go after Karlsson, Gorton and Hughes LOVE their defenseman. That's all they've added this year, other then Newhook. Habs of all the Canadian teams, finished last on TSN's list of how the Canadian teams did over the off-season. So they finished last, last season, of all the Canadian teams, (and not just by a little bit), so ud think they would want to improve their offense at least a little, THAT'S what they are lacking, their D is already looking good, even without Reinbacher, the offense could be MUCH, MUCH better, they could have added Leonard or even Michkov, they could have used the $8M they had put aside for that pos PLD, and used it on another 40 goal scorer, then we might actually have a team that can make the playoffs, and make some noise, but im sure Reinbacher and Newhook will give us the same boost…
When you say we won the deal, I think you mean not so much of the players, but the fact that we are getting out from under Bergevin’s bad contracts much faster than fans expected
Being a fan of Pitt and SJ, this will be interesting.
I've never heard about that perspective and you brought up some good points. Casey DeSmith is a darn good back-up and he's going to a team that has no pressure on itself at all. I think he'll enjoy his time in Montreal.

Nobody really won the trade, it made equal sense for every team but Pittsburgh got the best player, the guy who like, made the whole thing possible.
If you wanna factor the Petry-matheson trade included as an argument for why the habs win you’re probably right. Man hextall is a dunce
