Rick Dhaliwal: Quiet on Pettersson front – Canucks might be waiting to see how he does this upcoming season…

Dhaliwal not surprised contract talks are quiet, says it’s possible Canucks want to make sure he can deliver another 100 point season, also slightly worried he might want to leave Canadian market. Thoughts?

“Yes Petey, we aren’t sure if you’re the player we got..hold on a sec.. and we don’t want to pay yo..wait…where are you going? Why did you follow Detroit on insta?”

    “Who could have foreseen this?!”

In all seriousness if he leaves sell everyone and then sell the team

“We’ll wait and see how Pettersson will do in a contract year” has a “when keeping it real goes wrong” vibe.

So the Canucks had to re-sign Miller a full season before they needed to but are waiting to wait into this upcoming season to re-sign Petey?

I can’t say this makes me feel very good inside. I’m starting to worry.

For those who can’t listen, Dhali gives a lot of updates:

    On Petey:
    – It’s very quiet. No urgency from either side and it’s not surprising. He didn’t think they would get a deal done in July/August. Canucks might want to see if he puts up another 100pts season.
    – “In the end, I don’t see any issue with either side getting the deal done”
    – Says his biggest fear is Petey pulling a Tkachuk/De Brincat/ PLD who have left Canadian markets.
    – No player wants to stick around and keep losing in their prime years.

    On UFAs:
    – Without Horvat, Canucks have to worry about depth at C if Miller or Petey get injured. That’s why they’re still out there looking to make a trade or sign a free agent.
    – They have told agents to hold on while they clear space.
    – Names are already known: Comtois, Suter.

    On trades:
    – Myers and Garland are the names out there to clear space.
    – Dhali says moving these contracts reminds him of the Eriksson/Beagle/Roussel situation where the price to move them was high.

    On Pearson:
    – Last month he wasn’t convinced Pearson was healthy for camp, now he’s more positive Tanner is working out and getting ready for the season.
    – Also says Pearson is not tradable, hasn’t played since January and had 7 hand surgeries. No one in the NHL will trade for him before seeing him play again.

    On Hogs and Podz:
    – says they have to find a spot for those two in the lineup. They can’t keep getting healthy scratched or sent to the AHL. They need to be in the lineup to take the next step.

    On Bear:
    – Canucks are among teams interested in re-signing him. Would be a October/November signing.

    On Tocchet:
    – Dhali says the impact Tocchet had in Vancouver already is big.
    – **Dhali is predicting this will be one of the most well conditioned Canucks team in years**. Says there is no question in his mind.
    – He talked to the agents, the players are working hard. No one wants to show up at his camp out of shape.
    – because of Tocchet, there is a different feel. He’s a teacher, and he brought in Gonchar and Foote to teach.

    On Abbotsford:
    – He’s hearing amazing things about Abby, many agents are calling the Canucks that they want their players signed in Abby. It wasn’t the case in Utica, there were horror stories on how bad it was run.

I bet it is more Petey waiting to see how the team does in the first half of the season. He needs to believe they can win here.

I wouldn’t go over $11M for Petey. Love him or hate him. If I could snag him at $10m x 4, I do it and nail his prime. But that’s strategic thinking. Something foreign to the masses.
