On today’s Western Conference Tuesday edition of Locked on NHL, Seth Toupal and Nick Morgan start by discussing the Erik Karlsson trade. They try to determine which team got the better end of the deal, when in reality the Sharks got what they wanted by mostly getting out from under the contract, and the Penguins got another piece to help extend Sidney Crosby’s playoff window for another couple of seasons. We move to the Matt Dumba signing and the chances the Arizona Coyotes could make the playoffs in 2023-24. Seth and Nick both like the moves the Coyotes have made, but also note their chances of the postseason are going to be small considering the number of teams they would have to leapfrog. We finish by ranking the top 10 goalies in the Western Conference!

I feel like the Karlsson move is good for the Pens, but maybe not ideal for Karlsson.. sure its a better chance to win than he had in San Jose and i know there pretty much wasnt any other trade partners available.. but if I'm in his shoes I'd rather go to a team thats been a serious contender for a while now as opposed to a team who's window would pretty much be about to close without him.. he might end up in the same situation as he was with the sharks in a year or 2.. i guess the Pens can trade him for picks to kick start a rebuild whenevr #87 retires
who besides the 568 fans in arizona care whether they make the playoffs? they should be more concerned about getting an arena to play in.
I predict the Coyotes will finish last in the Central Division with a record of 19-51-12 and miss the playoffs. On December 7, Alex Meruelo will sell the Coyotes to a Hartford-based group led by billionaire hedge fund managers Stephen Mandel Jr. and Cliff Asness for $1.8 billion. On January 11, 2024, a Mandel/Asness-led group will finalize and close out the deal to purchase the Coyotes. On April 19, 2024, the Coyotes will fire GM Bill Armstrong and head coach Andre Tourigny. On May 13, 2024, a Mandel/Asness-led group will pay a relocation fee of $195 million to relocate the Coyotes to Hartford for the 2024-25 NHL season. On June 25, 2024, the NHL Board of Governors will approve the relocation of the Coyotes to Hartford in a 30-2 vote. As a result, the Coyotes will relocate to Hartford after 28 seasons in the Phoenix area to become the 2nd incarnation of the Whalers and play their home games at the XL Center in the 2024-25 NHL season.
