  1. When you have generational talent and a closing window I think it’s ok to go all in. Regardless the rest of the hockey world is ready for them to suffer. After all they went Mario to Sid. They need to enjoy some suffering….

  2. I really don't think this trade was all that risky. We are going to be in rebuild mode in a few years anyway. EK is an all-star caliber player; he is going to improve everyone around him. And we let go most of the high budget busts from the Hextal era all in one trade. We lost a first and second rounder, but the gain far exceeded the possible risk.

  3. For people saying the trade could age poorly, it really can't. If capfriendly is right, the pens actually gained cap space through the trade. Contracts like Grandlund and Petry's were going to require picks to dump anyway, and all the mocks showed the pens giving up multiple firsts, which they only gave up 1 and it's for this upcoming year. Compare this to the past where the pens were giving up first round picks for the likes of Kapanen and this trade is a straight case. As a lifelong pens fan, whether Karlsson plays like a stud or not, I'd rather see us going all in to compete w Sid and our core and it fail, then to just give-up on them early and start a rebuild. Here's to hoping for a fun year watching the Pen's Powerplay 😉

  4. Dude Pittsburgh is my team I would hate to see them fall like the coyotes.
But hey like you said the unpredictable is everywhere.

  5. Hahaha people still say EK65 cant defend. People are really stupid. Its amazing. Or if not stupid theyre trolling

  6. In terms of chemistry outside of the ice I'm happy we have Pettersson and Rakell in the team. They will help Karlsson get into the Pens vibe smoothly outside the rink. Now let's hope it also works out on the ice. As a Pens fan I'm excited for next season. And no matter if it works out or not, it will be an entertaining season!

  7. i think i speak for pittsburgh when i say well trade the next like decade of penguins hockey to capitalize on the final years of crosbys career

  8. NHL parody. Watch as soon as Crosby retires they fall and get the first over pick again like Chicago with Toews and Bedard

  9. At this point any Pens fan knows that it's gonna be a hard crash followed by seasons of suck, & while the flames aren't as high I'm glad they're keeping the fire going with another big log…

  10. I don't buy the whole "Dubas is a genius" narrative. I think he did what most people would have done in his situation. He had the opportunity to draft Marner 4th overall and took it, most people would have. Won the lottery next year and drafted Matthews, everyone would have done the same. Granted, he wasn't GM at that time but he was with the team and being hailed as the next wunderkind that was going to bring the leafs 1000 Stanley Cups in the next 10 minutes. He has the opportunity to get Tavares as a free agent and took it. Again, most people would have done the same. Obviously he's made some moves that didn't work out just as… everyone has. There is not 1 General Manager in any sport that has made 100% of the right moves 100% of the time. And who's kidding who? Pittsburg didn't hire him and say "hey man, can you blow up this team and start from scratch and rebuild from the ground up?" No they said "Hey, we want to win NOW. Can you come in here and make some moves so we can win now?"

  11. Dude they only really gave up a 1st and 2nd and dumped all the contracts they didn’t want. They didn’t have to give up any of their top prospects in Brayden Yager & Owen Pickering. Dubas gets an A+, fixed the problems Hextall left behind in his 1st year.

  12. Not really risky. They have a collection of aging stars with contracts who they are attempting to honour by taking another run. This group has won three cups during the 15 years of Crosby's tenure.
They have gone 20-13 in playoff series with Crosby in the line-up. They have missed the playoffs once, last year. They deserve taking a chance to make the playoffs and see what happens.

I don't think Karlsson is enough to challenge for a cup even if he can duplicate his 100 point season. Letang in the mix makes that less likely and it seems like you reap less benefit adding an offensive defenseman when you already have a really good one in the mix.

Success will be determined by how well Tristan Jarry can play and how well Alex Nedeljkovic can act as back up. The defense has never really recovered from the loss of Marino and Matheson.
I think Karlsson,, if he has recaptured some of his legendary speed, will help them on defense.

They make the playoffs, which I think they should and do anything ( who knows) then that is a cherry on top for the Crosby era. generally this will fall into a deep cavernous rebuild that will take longer because of the picks they have traded and the time they have put it off.

but so what. They have been perhaps the most successful team of the post 2005 HARD CAP era teams. They are due a little team adversity. Five years near the bottom shouldnt kill this team.

Being given a big job doesnt make a GM successful. Being Successful makes a GM successful. .

  13. I live in Eastern Pennslyvania and I go to their AHL Teams games a lot as they are not far. There isn't much talent there now, with this trade they are going to be worse in the future. It is a swing for the fences, but I don't think they have enough on the big club to win.

  14. I hate this concept that the Penguins are mortgaging the future. There is no future. Prospects they draft in 2023, 2024, or 2025 are completely off any timeline. They’ll hit the NHL after the core retires, and be closer to 30 before the Penguins rebuild swings back up. Picks right now are trade pieces, that’s all.

  15. We only gave up a 1st round pick next year. It's unreal how fans of other teams are overreacting to this trade and the Penguins' win-now attitude. They don't have too many good prospects, obviously, but they didn't give up any of them to get Karlsson. Legare (who went to Montreal) has been a bust and was getting benched in the AHL last year. Relax.

  16. Trying to think of a team in a comparable situation that made noise in the playoffs and you know, the Sharks in 2016 come to mind. A core where major pieces were somewhat past their prime etc. But man, this roster is OLD. If this implodes, will we finally admit, once and for all, Dubas isn't some wunderkind?

  17. The way I see it is that the Pens had two options…

    1) Tinker with their roster and likely end up just making or just missing the playoffs for the next few years.

    2) Take a big swing and try to get another deep runs out of their core guys.

Either way their core will likely be retiring in the next 3-5 years so you might as well swing for the fences now.

  18. The lean years are on there way for sure but I like their chances this year especially with Karlsson. They’re definitely an old team now but that doesn’t mean they’re a bad team. The main issue will come late in the season especially if they make it to the later rounds. But they do still have untapped potential in parts of their starting roster, Jarry in particular. Honestly if that player starts showing consistency, they are an extremely scary team. At times he’s flashed top 3 goalie potential. He just needs to stay healthy and focused.

  19. As a long time Canadian Penguins fan, I’d rather see them have a decade of rebuilding and make one more huge push for success with the core. For all those three have done for the franchise, they owe it to them to go all in with them. Fingers crossed we can bring one more cup to the Core

  20. Before last year karlson played and average of 50 games for the 5 seasons before that never playing 60.I know he had a resurgence last year 102 points and 80 games but that easy to do when the team is not trying to win .Let’s see if those bad ankles of his holds up to the grind of playing for a team trying to make the playoffs.I have a feeling he regressed to the player the Sharks could not get rid of fast enough
