Appreciation of Ovechkin’s rookie year

Was just thinking about this and thought I would share. I have a memory from Ovechkin’s rookie year that is really vivid and I think it is pretty cool now that it’s almost 20 years later.

I don’t know which game it was, but the Caps were playing the Devils early in the season (game logs suggest either November 5 or December 28, 2005). It was really hard to watch hockey back then if some will remember – it was either the Outdoor Network or regional – so I was only really seeing the highlights of Ovechkin’s goals. I don’t know if it was in the highlights or I was catching the game, but I remember [this hit on Colin White along the endboards](https://youtu.be/hxwJxkdCqYw?t=17) and having a moment of pure bewilderment. The way he played with such speed and belligerence and violence was just incredible, not to mention the scoring. It blew my mind. Still does. I thought there was no way he’d survive more than couple years before blowing out his knees or something, but here we are.

Anyway. Cool stuff to remember. Ovechkin is truly a spectacle.

His very first shift in the league set the tone for his HOF career here in DC. We’re lucky to have had a generational talent here in DC for almost 20 years. Best athlete to ever play pro sports in the city by a wide margin. Gonna enjoy these last few years 🙁
