The 2002 Red Wings Were Told They Were Too Old, Won the Cup Anyway

I wanted to discuss this today as it comes to mind anytime I hear a team is too old to win.

  1. I remember being so nervous for Game 6 against Colorado, and after the win I was more confident for Game 7. I actually did sit down with some popcorn and went out of my mind every time the Wings scored. That's the run I remember best out of the 4.

  2. In all honesty I never heard this argument. I thought the general consensus was that the 02' Wings were the overwhelming favourites from the start the the season to finish pf the playoffs.

  3. I got into Hockey real seriously in 01-02. I fell in love with the Wings due to their heavy forecheck, relentless possession and want for the puck, and of course the highlight reel goals galore. 22 years later and I'm still just as die hard now as I was then. It's why it was so hard to deal with how last season ended. But things are looking up even if it's taking some time, and I'm all for it. Go Wings!

  4. Being down 0-2 after two home losses in the first round, only to win four straight. Being down 2-3 in the Conference Final, to follow up with two shutout wins. Losing game 1 in the final and then winning four straight. Sounded familiar to me, as a Caps fan. (2018 cup win) No other comparisons though, as that Detroit team was ridiculously stacked!

  5. so many memorable moments: yzerman carrying on one leg, lidstrom goal from center ice completely changing the series, the statue of Liberty goal against roy, triple ot winner by larionov vs canes.

  6. I noticed several comments regarding the current Penguins and how they don't have the talent the 2002 Red Wings had, and as a result, cannot expect the same result.

The first part, that the Penguins do not have the same amount of talent, is true. The most talented and skilled Penguins team since 1991-92 was the 2008 team that lost to Detroit.
The second part, that the Pengiuns cannot expect the same success, is BS.
Kyle Dubas cleared out all of the dead weight and bad contracts (except Jeff Carter) that Hextall piled up. Dumolin was let go and he is done. Hextall had a half garbage defenseman group and the bottom six were lousy.
Dubas shed lousy players with huge contracts for Karlsson and surrendered a first round pick.
On paper, the Penguins have put themselves in a playoff spot and the team's success depends on Jarry and goid health.

  7. When Gretzky was asked couple of years ago how it felt for him to play for the greatest team ever his reply was : " I don't know because I've never played for Detroit Red Wings in 2002"

  8. I still wish Ozzie would've been kept so that he had that fourth cup. I'm not saying don't bring in Hasek. It isn't like the wallet was going to completely run out, though.

  9. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane. I was 10 years old when the Wings won the first cup in 97, such great memories for me as a young hockey fan.

  10. I mean fair enough on the age comparison, but frankly, even if you combined Capitals and Penguins into one roster, it wouldn't compare with the sheer amount of hall of fame level talent the Red Wings had. That roster is just insane. So it's less like they managed to win despite their age, it's more like this roster was so insane that it didn't matter that they were old.

  11. It was a bit more than the Lidstrom goal that finished the Canucks in Round One though, you need to mention Brian Burke's critique of the officiating in the games ahead. I remember laughing my ass off when Burke quipped "our goaltender can be identified as the player with the large pads, he's the one that doesn't dive and fall over whenever he is brushed".

  12. The late 90s/early 00s Wings – Avalanche series was the Golden Age of the old NHL. Some of the most intense, riveting hockey ever seen. Similar to Lakers – Celtics in the 80s. For some reason Bettman, in his infinite wisdom, decided that wholesale changes were needed just a couple years later and the product became much worse.

  13. Now this is something I remember well. This team being put together in the summer of 2001. Hull, Hasek, then Robitaille going cause Hasek was there. Followed them all season and on tv they played Oasis “F*ckin’ in the bushes» as a middle finger to islamists snd we’re going on with our way of life.
