On January 4th, 2007, former first overall pick Patrick Stefan missed a wide open net against the Edmonton Oilers sparking, one of the craziest moments in NHL hockey history. In this video we break down the butterfly effect of this one mistake…

Yoo
Patric Stefan you should be embarrassed
Brutal
2 Red Headed Swedish Twins < Patrik Stefan…
So many crazy trade trees yet a bouncing puck in a meaningless game has more impact than half of them.
Just to think, if Stefan scored that goal, Connor McDavid would most likely not be an Edmonton Oiler. Neither would Draisaitl be too most likely.
Awesome. Beautiful butterfly effect content, constructed masterfully.
Man that is actually wild. A ‘bust’ first overall pick probably had more of an impact on the NHL than if he actually just panned out as expected. Love these vids
This week in sportball
Wake up babe, HP just dropped a new butterfly effect video
It is also interesting because a similar thing( Chicago beating Pittsburgh) led to the blackhawks getting Bedard
loving the content dude. crazy that any moment and every game can have such a huge impact on the future
Remember. This game was played in January. What about all the shots to the post during the season, no impact?
I find it funny how Sam Gagner had 8 points against the Blackhawks
Cool vid.
Aren't the hockey GODS a funny bunch ? All Stefan had to do was slam that puck to the back of the net and VOILA game over and the Oilers might have gotten Patrick Kane int he draft . In another universe I'm sure that's what Stefan would've done .
Stefan was unfairly vilified for this, the puck clearly hit a piece of debris and hopped over his stick. It just lead to the most improbable sequence of on-ice events in league history.
If frogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their arses.
I remember being at this game as a kid and even though we lost in a shootout the crowd was still so electric and crazy after the game you never would've known it. Best memory at the old stadium too
I love these types of videos. keep em coming!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Imagine if Kaner got drafted to oilers and todays line would be kane mcdavid and drai…
Stefan knew what he was doing
Why do ppl say he made a mistake when the puck clearly decided it was not going in the net. It jumps over his stick just as he is about to put it in. Not his fault. Feel so bad for him.
I was watching this game at home, with my brother and mom. Will never forget it.
I remember i couldnt sleep that night i was just replaying it over and over in my head.
Talk about the butterfly effect
Not to mention how all this impacted the Wirtz family. Draft a player number one overall, a Wirtz family member dies. Draft another player number one overall, a Wirtz family member dies. Do you think hawks ownership wants the team to tank again?
The best mistake the NHL has ever had.
Ok this is a wild story but the night before this game my buddy was playing a peewee exhibition game and at the end of the game wanted to make his mark on the ice. So when the team was over by their net giving the goalie some taps he kicked his heel into the ice and he claims he did it in the exact spot the puck bobbled at.
Chicago got Bedard because the draft lottery was fixed for them. Chicago is a big market! Not Anaheim nor Columbus. If the Ducks and Kings swapped positions, LA would've landed Bedard and not Chicago.
I don't think we can look back this one single game and pinpoint the reason why Chicago would get the first overall pick in that years draft. There was what another twenty or so games remaining and this one is the reason. Nah man
You realize the lottery is random right? It wasn't fated that 5th seed would win no matter what.
In my opinion the true crime in this situation is his setup passed to the oilers after missing the empty net. Missing the empty net was kind of bad luck, at that point though he should have been thinking about just preserving the lead. Easy for me to say, but if you look at how it all went down it was the perfect situation for Edmonton to tie the game. You know all of his teammates probably were like f*** this guy, and all of Edmonton's team got an insane boost of momentum
crazy!!
A few weeks ago, I left a comment on a Secret Base video. I mentioned this moment for their Rewind series. Someone replied to the comment, stating that the missed goal had a greater impact than the play itself.
I was at the Stefan missed goal game. Little did I know the impact it really had. Thank you for this video, great work.
No wayyyyy
do a video of the 'Bettman' affect.
Chicago would have magically gotten the 1st pick regardless
Great video and some awesome information that I wasn't aware of. Subscribed!
Poor Štefan is never gonna live this one down
That was fascinating and brilliant all in one YouTube video‼️ 👍❤️
Now, could Kane still end up an Oiler before he retires?
So in summary, Toews career would be a waste, the Oilers would have won 3 cups, McDavid would be a Blackhawk, and Bedard would be an Oiler.
