Who Will Be The First Player To Get A Big Time Deal From Mike Grier And The San Jose Sharks?

Mike Grier has been very hesitant to give out a big contract since arriving in San Jose. Who could be the first player to get a large contract for the San Jose Sharks? Start by looking at all the players who are on expiring contracts this season and why most don’t make sense to earn a big deal except two. How could Alexander Barabanov capitalize on another great season to earn a deal for the Sharks, and if Anthony Duclair could be in line for a pay raise with a 25-30 goal season? Then, suppose Grier wants to be aggressive in the offseason. Which players could be available in free agency, including Bay Area native Auston Matthews, super Swede William Nylander, and an early look at what the top of the 2024 free agency class? Finally, which of the Shark prospects could earn long-term deals in the future, and why it’s better to pay players like William Eklund and Will Smith sooner rather than later?

  1. Unfortunately with Matthews, and I hate to say it, I get a grubby feeling that CHI would make a BIG swing if he wants to leave TOR. They'd be foolish not to. Bedard will make that town an attractive market for big free agents for many, many years. Hopefully Matthews would prefer life on the west coast if the situation arises next summer.

  2. I think if Matthews is going to go anywhere, it would be SJ. Marleau is very close to Matthews and could vouche for SJ. You know Grier would pay for that contract. Plus hes from the area, and Scottsdale isnt too far. Plus no media frenzy in the bay. Could bring tons of fans back to the Tank.
