Pardon my ignorance, but what are these banners actually commemorating?
OctoArtist80
It’s a respect to the Original Sens
olive865
Yes , yes they should
Shiny_Mew76
They technically are not the current Senators cups, but hanging these banners pays respect to the old team. It’s very similar to what Seattle is doing.
MJStozy
So what you’re saying is that, despite producing many of the best players ever to play the game, Ontario’s aggregate Cup drought is 152 years? Man, get your shit together up there.
alwayssunnyinphilly1
It was 100 years ago, the Belleville senators could claim them for all I care.
heimos
Absolutely
jarpio
The franchise doesn’t claim those cups. Showing off the heritage of your city’s hockey history is okay with me. It’s like going to a local rink and seeing the banners of the travel team that used to play there still hanging up.
stos313
In North America, since leagues and their franchises have monopolies on pro sports it’s common for cities to honor – even on an official level – the successes of previous franchises.
Southbird85
They are the original NHL/NHA dynasty in multiple decades, I think it would be an affront to the game’s history by not recognizing their winning. For their time, the individual player statistics were pretty insane. Cy Denneny had 243 career goals in 329 NHL games.
Grizzly_Addams
The Wild would most likely have Northstars banners if any existed.
miseenplastique
Ya know, I agree that they can do whatever they want – but I wonder if hanging them where their own banners should go might be bad hockey god juju.
They could put them up anywhere in the arena to honour the original franchise, but putting them *there* gets my superstitious-sense tingly.
CountKristopher
I feel like those banners belong to the city, where else should they be hung? HoF maybe but it robs the city of honouring those champions. Are they the same franchise? Of course not but it doesn’t matter cuz it changes nothing.
True-Entry-1739
They are honoring the original Ottawa Senators so it makes sense for the Current Ottawa Senators to show off the 11 Stanley Cup Banners to honor the Original Ottawa Senators.
stonehawk61
Non issue, let the fans of Ottawa honor their cities hockey heritage.
Seeumleeum
The banners are clearly painted in a different decal than the current franchise’s. I think they could be a *little* more clear with the banners, but they’re obviously not trying to claim them for the current franchise. They’re still the city’s.
rickzaki
They appear to be ABLE. A banner weighs careless than a scoreboard. It actually seems rather easy to do Semantics aside, Should they be allowed? Who cares! If it is meant to show off, it fails miserably to say we haven’t won’t a cup in a hundred years.
Boring_Pace5158
Yes, they are celebrating the hockey history in the city. They are not claiming them. Look at how different the Finnigan jersey banner is from the Alfredsson jersey, showing that the modern Sens are different from the original Sens.
Fezthepez
Better than what Nashville did.
lilnyucka
Why not? Tf
Substantial_Rip_9311
Who the fuck cares.
DesignerPlant9748
Absolutely the city of Ottawa should be able to celebrate those titles.
dbag3o1
Look, someone won those cups and they deserve banners to honor them. Who should hang up those banners? Unless you want them hung on traffic lights around the streets of Ottawa, the answer is the Senators.
noodleyone
The weirdest thing is Finnigan being retired and not Nighbor or Denneny or Benedict.
amach9
Glad to see no one really bit on this troll post from a new account
AdaptiveCenterpiece
I am curious why finnegans dates weren’t 1923-1933. What happened in 31-32?
StumptownRetro
Honestly if it’s in the same city with the same name, I’m all for it. Ottawas original team isn’t one that still exists as a relocated and rebranded team. Ever since the dissolution of the St Louis Eagles that franchise simply doesn’t exist. This isn’t like Winnipeg. But even then I feel more like the city owns that teams history than wherever they move to.
If the Seattle SuperSonics ever come back in NBA I’d expect them to keep their history and not have to give it up to the Oklahoma City Thunder who have definitely made their own history and image.
Vault204
They won those titles didnt they?
larmik
I had to check to see if the NHL gave the original Senators history to the current version of the franchise (like the NFL did for the newest version of the Cleveland Browns) but they didn’t.
” NHL Media Guide 2010. The original Senators organization, also known as the Ottawa Hockey Club, won the Stanley Cup eleven times, not the current franchise founded in 1992. Neither the NHL nor the Senators claim the current Senators to be a continuation of the original organization or franchise. The awards, statistics and championships of both eras are kept separate and the NHL franchise founding date of the current Senators is in 1992.”

Yeah, it’s weird.
MPD1978
Is their name on the Cup for those wins? If so, I have no problem with the banners. I know it’s two different time periods but I’m not going to gripe on it.
ScrumpyRumpler
It’s kind of like wearing your grandpa’s war medals – you can do it but It’s kind of low brow.
Look, they can hang whatever the hell they want up there – it’s their arena. But in my opinion anything hung from the rafters should be directly tied to your franchise. What hangs above the players should be the result of that franchise and that franchise only. I get that they make it clear that those banners are from the original Senators team, but in that case go ahead and do something to commemorate the original squad in the concourses or elsewhere. But putting up banners in the rafters that technically don’t belong to your current franchise just seems tacky to me.
spartacat_12
As a kid, seeing those banners is what got me interested in hockey history. My grandfather had an old book of Ottawa sports history he gave me, and I read all about the original Senators teams. No fans of the team actually try to claim those Cups, but it is an interesting piece of history to honour.
However, 11 banners might be a little much. When they eventually move into a new rink I wouldn’t mind just having one banner honouring the original team showing each year that they won
nair-jordan
Fun fact: when the modern Sens were founded, the NHL awarded them a certificate of reinstatement. So while the records are technically kept separate, considering that it’s the same city, same team name, and that they were officially reinstated by the league at the inauguration…you could make a reasonable argument that it’s the same team (why else would they retire Finnigan’s number?)
johnny_s_chorgon
They fixed my one issue with it a couple years ago, which was the old banners having the Centurion logo. The newer banners make it clear these are cups honouring the “Silver Seven” era Senators.
It’s a funny little bit of splitting hairs either way. Like when they hang these banners or embed the years these Cups were won in the striping of their third jersey we’re talking about Cups Ottawa won, not the Senators.
Basically to really go nerdy with it, the Sens are the Piccolo Jr of franchises. Not quite the son of the OG Sens, but not quite the reincarnation either.
kid_drew
Cups of course belong to franchises, but they also belong to the fans. The team can move or fold but the fans are still there. Even with the new Sens being a different franchise, the people of Ottawa get to claim those cups so putting them in the rafters is fine.
LoveEffective1349
Yes.
the Ottawa senators won those cups.
they are pre NHL so who cares.
it’s like asking if the Winnipeg Jets should retire Ducky’s number…. the NHL officially says no. Arizona is the Franchise he played for…..
TNSE just call it the Winnipeg Jets Hall Of Fame…and don’t give a shit about Arizona’s franchise. or what numbers they retire or not. and hang Ducky’s #10 in our Barn.
iamjaydubs
Lakers have Minnesota’s teams in the rafters, Dodgers with Brooklyn’s in 1955. I don’t see why this is an issue?
ch22711
No. Different Team.
Stockersandwhich
If the Kracken can hang up the Mets cup banner, so can the Sens.
Dkoop2003
If Seattle can do it so can Ottawa and Vancouver
slamdyr
Why not? The Yankees fans brag about their 15 or so WS wins before blacks were even allowed into the majors. What’s the big deal with them hanging flags for wins over 100 years ago
No-Material-23
Their name is etched on the cup 11 times. It’s called the “Stanley Cup” not the NHL Cup, and if I recall correctly, the NHL doesn’t own the cup.
