Shayna Goldman on Twitter: “Two salary retentions later, and Jeff Petry should be even more cost-effective at $2.34 million for Detroit. There’s still upside in his game, but the one concern is about how it will age this + next season. That Red Wings blue line is still underwhelming, though 🫣”

I’m not concerned at all. It’s a 2 year contract at a low cap hit without a no-trade clause.
Worst case scenario he’s got nothing left in the tank and he wastes 2.5m a season on a team that isn’t anywhere near the cap either this season or next.
Petry just had 30 points in 60 some games for a team that didn’t make the playoffs. I genuinely don’t understand how this defense is underwhelming. It’s not amazing or anything but to me it’s average to good. I think we need a better second pairing long term but as of right now I think it’s pretty fucking solid. And everyone but chiarot is on short term deals.
He’s a fine depth piece and more importantly an improvement over the player traded. He’s also a vet (the only 35 year old aside from Perron and Reimer) who wants to be with the team. I think having a good culture starts with positive leadership and Petry seems to fit that to a tee
Underwhelming relative to what exactly?
I swear these are some of the lease intuitive charts around
This chart is trash but clearly it’s predicted that he will provide offense and be average to a bit below but not terrible. Show me the lindstrom chart and it’ll show us winning the deal
When you’re 35 in the NHL.. there’s no upside lol.
Goals against last season we were 22nd, big improvement from the previous season – and now it’s even better. It’s definitely NOT underwhelming.
