Breakout and Regression Candidates for the Wild in 2023-24!

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, Zach Zeman joins as we discuss breakout and regression candidates for the 2023-24 season! We start with breakout players, with a small pool of players that would qualify such as Brock Faber and Marco Rossi. We look at what would need to happen for both to thrive and why it’s imperative in Rossi’s case that he is given the opportunity to play a meaningful role. We move to players who could “step up” this season. We discuss who is most likely between Ryan Hartman, Mats Zuccarello and Marcus Foligno to recapture previous form and move on from subpar seasons. We finish by looking at players who could regress this year, including how the Wild are hoping to mitigate any potential Marc-Andre Fleury regression by making Filip Gustavsson the starter.

  1. Rossi will be 22 on Sept 23. I would not be disappointed if he needs another year in Iowa. He lost ONE FULL YEAR due to Myocarditis, so the most accurate lens through which to perceive his development, in my opinion, is to think of him as a 21-year-old. Plus, different guys are ready at different times. He might be ready this year, but if not, hopefully next year or the year after. That he was rated in the top five before he signed with the Wild points to the fact that giving him at least one more year to develop is the prudent path to take, IMO. Patience is not one of my strengths, and it's not the strength of most fans, so let's all practice some patience and develop our "patience muscles." I realize that the word "fan" comes from "fanatics," and fanatics are not in the top tier of clear, rational thinkers.

  2. If Foligno continues to menace referees and pull the Gladiator Act, he needs to do it somewhere else! He was nothing but a penalty magnet in the playoffs and you can bet the refs have not forgotten the antics. It was a mockery and the team was shoved down the chute by his behavior and the team didn't recover.

  3. Hmmm
Foligno has lost a step maybe two
Zuggs ran out of steam age is catching up with him
Hartman played with his head up his ass
Most of the season I still think it was girlfriend problems.
I look for Duhaim to have a big year
I would put him on second pp
With Dewar take advantage of his speed

  4. Gus the bus should play 60 games this year, fleur only plays on back to backs
As I said yesterday the Wild season
    Really is surrounded by Rossi
Give him 20 games with Kaprisov Zuggs
That's going to be a nitemare for any team Rossi will shine this year

  5. Another player you didn't mention
Beckman is going to be really good
As long as they give him a chance
    At least 20 games
    Gudreau is steady Freddy
Travis brought this up and the more
I think about it, I really like his take
    For defense pairing
    Middleton Spergon
    Addison Brodin
Faber and who makes the team
    That's three very solid lines
I'm thinking Mermis he didn't look out place when he played
    My thoughts for today

  6. Without any money in the kitty…Unless the signing of Gus was making sure he has some trade bait. Sure, put him with Kaprizov for a year to get his stock up for trading later..He's to small for long term Kaprizov spot…He's not taking Joel's spot long term. To small for bottom six and he probably doesn't want a grinding role anyway..It's a who cares type of year coming up anyway…Problem is…the rest of the league will know if Kaprizov is carrying him..Will be interesting what happens with Rossi..

  7. Agreed on Foligno, hopefully we can strike a trade.

but I think Hartman has best chance to "bounce back" as he's going to be playing for a new better contract. the way he was playing 2 years ago he could've fought for a $4mill contract

  8. Faber passed my "eye test" right away. I hope it continues, as we all do. Rossi has not passed my "eye test" to date. I don't think he will, I hope I am wrong. We gotta get over Rossi being a "1st rounder" as he was part of a horrendously bad draft class. For those that believe Rossi "tore it up" in Iowa, he didn't. He was tied for 50TH in the league in points. I get the idea of putting Rossi with Kirill and Zucc, but there's also a defensive aspect to the Centre position that, IMO, Rossi is not ready for @ 1C. He's still young. I think he needs 1 more season in Iowa. I would prefer Walker, who played centre in Edina and for the Gophers, and Beckman get the call-up before Rossi. BUT Rossi is going to get his chance in camp, Billy has no other choice. So, I hope Rossi proves me wrong and earns that 1C or 2C spot. Key word earns.
Freddie won't regress. He's a late bloomer that never had a home. He does now. 20+ goals.
My concern is BOLDY regressing 😬

  9. The Kings are going to start to see that the Wild may not have lost this trade. Especially when Yulov comes to fruition. Faber is a great acquisition and a top four for the next 5-10 years.
Rossi is the wildcard, period. If he develops and moves forward, the Wild will be formidable. He will have periods where it looks like he’s taking a step backwards, that’s normal, he still is young and center is a learning curve. Fingers crossed…
Gusty will be fine, positional goalie with size in a D structure. As for the 3 vets, 17 will bounce back and be fine, too much pride, Hartman as well. I’m concerned with Zuccarello as he disappeared in the playoffs and that was extremely concerning and a big reason the Wild got punched out. Good stuff again 💯…
