Please help me through a strategy to be under the cap with Price’s contract for the start of the season

LTIR is very complicated, and it works differently depending on if you need to place someone on it before the start of the season or not. With the Habs’ current situation, it would behoove them to get below the cap before the start of the season so that they can get as close to Price’s full contract amount back to use as an asset at the trade deadline.

According to Cap Friendly, the Habs currently have a cap hit of $87,277,916 with 27 players counting (5 guys, including Price, are still technically “hurt” and not counting towards the roster limit.

Puck Pedia has published a projected 23-man roster (12 forwards, 8 defencemen, 3 goalies + Price) that brings the cap hit to $84,927,917. However, they have included Ylonen, Pezzetta, and Wideman as non-roster, ie waived and either being claimed or sent to Laval.

My question is this: Couldn’t the Habs just send waiver-exempt guys to Laval for the start of the season, then immediately place Price on LTIR and bring them back? Harris, Barron, and Harvey-Pinard are all waivers-exempt and their cap hits together with Wideman (who I am not afraid of being claimed) would bring the Habs just below the limit, which is ideal. Why is this not a better option than risking losing Pezzetta and Ylonen?

I’m on my phone so I can’t pull up everything but I’m pretty sure if they just assign everyone who is waiver exempt they become cap compliant.

Yes, that’s what they’ll do. The only player who will get waived is Wideman. Hopefully, they trade DeSmith. Two or 3 of Harris, Barron, Xhekaj, Slafkovsky, Guhle, or RHP can all be assigned to AHL prior to Opening Day in a paper transaction, which will put us below the Cap. Price put on LTIR on the 1st day. Players are recalled. However, when Dvorak is back from IR, we will have to send another player to Laval to comply with the 23-man roster rules.

We are good, we don’t need to do any move…

I have the same understanding that trading Desmith and waving Wideman is enough.

We have plenty of guys that can be put on paper in Laval, Harris at 1.4M and RHP at 1.1M being able to “send” to Laval gives us that flexibility.

We’ll be able to capitalize our capspace and will be able to make a sweet move with our last retain spot at TDL.

Price ended the season on LTIR and would need to pass a physi al to be taken off LTIR

Dvorak start the season on IR since he’s not able to play to start the season?
