Three Young New York Islanders Players at a Crossroads Who Could Really Impact the 2023-24 Season

Today we discuss three young New York Islanders players who are at a crossroads in their careers. How they handle this season will have a huge impact on their futures in the NHL and how the Isles do this season.

All three of them are former first round picks, Simon Holmstrom, Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson. Each of them are at a different stage in their NHL careers and each need to accomplish and learn different things. We break down what they need to do and how it changes things for Lane Lambert’s team on today’s show.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Holmstrom offers nothing. Dobson hopefully rebounds. Isles need a true pp d man to take pressure off of dobson. The key is wahlstrom. On a cheap one year prove it or else deal. Wahlstrom needs to produce goals. 20 is about right. If wahlstrom can score 25-30 that is a big bonus for isles offense. I wouldn't hold my breath for 25-30. Will probably play with 13,14 so that chance is there. No more excuses for 26. Score or move on. Either wahlstron gets it or he doesn't by now.

  2. Listening to you talk about Walstrom made me think of a young Bobby Nye…..It could have been your passion as a deep Islander Fan…..OR…..it could be the tequila i am nursing at the time of this comment lol……either way Great energy, Great stuff…..Go Islanders!!!

  3. I don't care whether Wahlstrom "deserves" to play 20 minutes a night or not and if you're actually an Islanders fan, neither should you, and that's because he is the only player on that putrid roster CAPABLE of touching 50 goals in a season with his shot in his NHL career. All those other guys either can't do it or are beyond the point in their careers where they can. It's a possibility for Wahlstrom; therefore, you throw him in the deep water and let him sink or swim for real. NONE OF THE VETERANS EARN THEIR MINUTES FOR THIS FRANCHISE, ANYWAY!!! That's my attempt to respond here to the amorphous blob about Wahlstrom.

And for the record, Kovalev, Straka, and Lang were all on that Pens team, and they're all better (when adjusting for median production of the time) than the stars surrounding Wahlstrom are.

Iginla was a very unique player and had a window of time where he was probably the best forward in the game, although the way the game was called might have had something to do with that.

  4. Gil as you succinctly expressed, there are at least four players that need to emerge and at least four others that need to be soundly healthy throughout the year for this team to be successful and competitive. I'm assuming we're gearing up for our pre seasoner against the Rangers now, Sept 23rd…very excited to see any developments. I hope you can do a show on COACHING soon. I still don't remotely understand how we can bring back the same two, as they were utterly embarrassing and albatross' to this team! Love your insights Gil 😊

  5. It would be pure gold for the Isles if all 3 turned out to be a lot better this year. Dobson has been a 50 pt defenseman in his 2 full seasons. If that's as good as it gets, I'll take it. 50 pt, D-men don't grow on trees.
Both 'stroms had their development hampered by covid and their offensive confidence shaken by Trotz. I'm starting to doubt Simons offense, but Oliver has averaged about 1/3 PPG while playing decent 2-way hockey. Considering the knee injury, I'm feeling confident Lane will slot him in a good situation and help him develop.

  6. Good morning Gil and team. I'm looking forward to watching the younger players this season. I'm sure there will be some pleasant surprises to see. Thank you for an excellent show! Again, glad you are back and seem to be doing well! Until our next meeting.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  7. Great show Gil. I love Wally but I also agree with you that this is a step or get out of the way year for him. I believe he has it in him, I think he has been in his own head a bit. I think his treatmnet by the club plays a factor in that. Looking at this history coming up I believe he expects to be a focus point and has learned the lesson, maybe in a hard way and much like college football players od when they enter the NFL, even if you were always the man wherever you were before you get to the show, everybody on the team was the man somewhere. He just has to grab the rope and pull as hard as he can. He needs to go all in , really commit, and prove to everyone but most of all himself that he can be a significant cog in our wheel. I have no real faith or feel for Holmstrom. I also like Noah but I thnk regressed a bit. Maybe the young guys are gun shy to push and maybe make some mistakes. Watching the clubs treatment of Wally perhaps he is thinking do enough to keep in the line up and don;t really strive to move farther forward at the risk of being penalized. I hope he can manufacture the confidence to give it a go. He coudl make a difference.

  8. too much success for Wahlstrom, 30 goals this season, i think will have him signing elsewhere for 24-25.

  9. Normally agree with you Gil, but Dobson is a top 4 D already on any team. THG recently had him at 29 in his top 30 D Men.

  10. Steve from Westbury
I wanna know, apparently Lou is still hot with Boston to trade Pageau in return for Debrusk! If this happens, I'm not sure I see how it makes us better and I think imo it makes us worse! Your thoughts!!

  11. Really hope Wally has great year this because have strange feeling if he does leave the team he’ll go somewhere else and become a star
