Today we’re talking about the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, and discuss the Buffalo Sabres and their 1st overall pick. Common consensus says they’ll be taking University of Michigan defenceman Owen Power, but today we’ll be arguing they go with his teammate instead: Matthew Beniers.

This’ll be a big take, so please hear me out.

  1. Buffalo taking Matty Beniers, would make Seattle have to pick Powers ,who then look for another player that is as good as Beniers, since they probably were already to pick him in the draft, since consensus picks say Powers then Beniers. You know Seattle's pick is going right to NHL play time first day, not sure if Buffalo puts Powers on ice day one.

  2. There are equal or if not better centers in next years draft (Wright, Savoie, McGroarty, Cooley and Jack D. Hughes) plus Brad Lambert at RW. I think we can all predict Buffalo will be picking in the top 3 anyways so add Power now and move ahead to offense.
Defenders Nemec, Luneau, and Jiricek may not have the talent projection as Power anyway.

  3. Owen Power looked really good in world championship but if Buffalo needs a C then they might go for that instead

  4. I would absolutely take Beniers first overall because Beniers being a 200 foot Center could be a Bergeron or Toews in the NHL. Which if Beniers ends up becoming either I as a Sabres fan would be 100% happy with. Now if the Sabres do Trade Eichel and LA offers up Turcotte in a trade he too is a 200 foot center. The Sabres could have the best 3 centers in the NHL because Cozen also plays a 200 foot game. Having 3 Centers that play a 200 foot game with playmaking abilities will allow you to surround your Centers with some skilled wingers who can finish. Even if you have a Jeff Skinner who sucks in his own zone, having Centers that can play a very good 200 foot game can help cover up 1 or 2 horrible wingers if those wingers can put the puck in the net. This also makes the Sabres a harder team to play against because you have 3 centers that play like Bergeron or Toews.

  5. This draft has been vastly underrated, in my opinion. There are a whole host of top tier prospects, and the fact there wasn’t any one particular guy that jumped out as elite name two years ago shouldn’t lessen the draft as a whole.

  6. 2022 and 2023 mega star's 2022 Shane Wright – Brad Lambert – Matt Savoie 2023 Connor Bedard – Matvei Michkov – Adam Fantlli

  7. Especially after the World championships I think it's not even close anymore at all because of how good he looked

  8. Cozens/Beniers 1-2 punch would be nice. Seattle taking a Hughes brother would be nice while also building a defense like Carolina. Anaheim would get a Power/Drysdale pairing for the next 10 years

  9. I personally feel this all depends on Ristolainen. It makes sense to trade him and replace him with powers. He would Fetch a good package but we all know it doesn't matter who buffalo gets, their career is already Ruined.

  10. Buffol actually we were thinking of trading it for A 7 th round pick and a 6 th I thinks it’s a good haul

  11. it basically is whos career do they want to ruin? thats what it comes down to

  12. They need to trade laukkonen for some defenseman or an actual winger . That goalie gets hurt too often…trade the #1 pick to Seattle get some one they get from expansion draft …. then Eichel maybe happy ?

  13. I clicked on this video to quickly go and comment HELL NO but during that split second it came to me that this is really not a bad idea. I mean Buffalo has become a stale franchise. They need some kind of excitement. And nothing screams excitement like a defenseman, right? Exactly. Benier seems like the kind of guy that can bring the type of excitement that can have a ripple effect throughout the organization and fanbase. And by ripple effect I also mean it may reinvigorate Eichel and give him a reason to stay🤷‍♂️ Owen Power is the obvious choice but Beniers may actually end up being more beneficial for Buffalo🤷‍♂️

  14. If there guna trade eichel it Atleast makes sense to A get a competent replacement for him in the trade then B have a punt at getting a compairable/better replacement.

  15. Certainly the issue of Eichel and Reinhart both wanting out makes getting a center more interesting. The problem becomes then you don't have any good example players for these guys to learn from. You don't have a Brain Rolston who taught Patrice Bergeron. Or the like. That's a problem. When all of your centers are young it's not really a great system to grow them in. Much the same can be said of Dahlin. He'd probably have benefited greatly from having a good veteran to learn from. Risto is a good example of what can happen when you do not do that. Buffalo isn't in a good enough place to not take the best player they can. And frankly if they were going to do that it'd make more sense for them to trade back a pick or two. Try and get another asset for the 1 pick. Even if it's just a late second or early third. If you aren't going to take the consensus 1 you shouldn't use the first pick.

  16. Lego is trying to figure out who goes #1. I'm trying to figure out a way either Owen, Beniers, Hughes or Johnson drop to the Red Wings at #6. Either way… they're all playing in Ann Arbor this fall. GO BLUE!!

  17. I want Buffalo to get 3 first round picks, trade Eichel, Reinhart get extra two picks, draft best D man and two best forwards. Buffalo has had extra first round picks a bunch of times in last 8 years

  18. Being where the Kraken are…it's win or win no matter who Buffalo picks. Either a stud D or a beauty of a Centermen.

  19. To draft safely and higher chance of success, a defencemen should not be drafted the first one unless the player is extraordinary outstanding. Also, Buffalo needs another high quality centerman to replace Eichel.
Therefore, forwards may be drafted higher than defencemen this year. Maybe starting No. 4 or 5 we may see some teams to start selecting defencemen.

  20. Man I really hope Buffalo can start to turn it around next season. It’s sad to see first round picks up wasting away on such a bad team.

  21. From what I’ve heard, Power isn’t even a potential number 1, franchise d man, so obviously, you’d look at Beniers or, hell, one of the other defensemen in the draft. It’s mainly Powers’ size and mobility that people like, but lots of guys have that, but if you can’t shut down opponents or at least create offence, you’re one of a zillion taller guys who are mid-level NHLers at best. At 1st overall, you want to make a big offensive splash if you can. You can always teach defense.
