The Pens missed the playoffs and opted to double down on getting back into contentio rather than a retool or rebuild.

  1. The bitter Maple Laffs fans who blame Dubas for their playoff failures are just a bitter bunch. Then there the Penguins haters.
Dubas has gotten rid of almost all of the dead wood Hextall brought in. This, by itself, is a major improvement.
The bottom six is much improved defensively. There is still a lot of scoring punch.
Potentially, Pittsburgh has passed the Islanders and Rangers. Dubas did indeed improve the cap situation. They are going after Tatar and the last remaining dead weight are Jeff Carter and Jack Johnson.

Look for Dubas to go aftrr Hellebucyk – for Jarry, a young defenseman, maybe Pickering or Ty Smith and a draft pick.
This team will go as far as their health and goaltending take them, which can be said for any team.

  2. I expected this team to make the playoffs after the playoffs streak is over, I just donā€™t know when the playoffs comes around in April, if they can do the playoff run like the Florida Panthers just did, Iā€™m completely fine with that if that happens. Iā€™m cautiously, optimistic.

  3. Definitely a playoff team and if they can stay healthy I think theyā€™ll surprise allot of people this year!!!

  4. Stanley Cup Champs!! Why don't you talk about Crosby's defense? Does McDavid play defense? How many cups has McDavid won??

  5. I expect goaltending to still be the limiting factor of this team, but they'll make the playoffs.

  6. Context from the sage Shannon
    A win Pitts season changes
Florida season becomes a failure….how fine is the edge in sports
" The pathway to salvation is as narrow and difficult to walk, as a razor's edge"
The Razors Edge ( Bill Murray or Tyronne Powers, version)

Also makes me think of be careful who you want as an opponet in the playoffs
Yay Pitts is out they scared me, Fla is way betteršŸ˜…

  7. Maybe Dubas is playing the long game. If he works his way around the eastern conference trapping teams with ageing cores and cap hell maybe the Leafs will get through? šŸ¤”šŸ˜‹šŸ˜Š

  8. Letang said in an interview that he mentally wasn't able to get back into the swing last year which between his stroke and his father's death, I think everyone was surprised to even see him play again last season, let alone feel mentally there. I hope he has a great season this year.

  9. Amazing how one game can change the šŸ„  furtunes of two teams and maybe the whole Playoffs.

  10. Amazing how long Pitts has danced the line of using assets to stay in playoffs/ win a cup, vs crash and burn of delaying a rebuild

I do agree this can work for Pitts if the trio stay healthy

  11. Jarry is so weak and a head case on top of it. Pens need to upgrade G soon or they will continue to hit the greens every April. Sad but True!

  12. "The last march of the Ents" I think they are a good chance to make it this year.

    After that though…

  13. They'll probably get back into the playoffs, I don't believe the addition of Karlsson makes an old team a little older, and not that much better to do anything significant when they get there. Unless the goaltending is lights out, it's another year of Crosby pulling the sled of slim forward depth scoring

  14. Talk about going all in. I have questions considering age and the goaltending duo, but they'll be fun to watch. 4th in the Metro and just short in the WC race with 91-96 points.

  15. I still think the top three is Canes/Devils/Rangers but maybe the Pens can sneak into that third spot if injury luck smiles upon them. Thatā€™s a huge ā€œif.ā€ Especially for Karlsson.

  16. The Pens also have Hellberg from the Wings, who may give Ned a run at backup goalie, similar to how it was when they were both here in Detroit.

  17. they are ahead of many teams in the East : montreal, detroit, ottawa, philly, columbus, washington.
they will fight for the wildcard unless the rangers start tanking.

  18. Even with Karlsson, all that offensive power is not gonna cover up their defense and goaltending.

  19. The dearth of secondary scoring last season can't be understated. I think people have a tendency to compartmentalize any team's shortcomings. But if one aspect of a team is exceptionally bad, it has a domino effect on other aspects of the game. And Pittsburgh's nonexistent secondary scoring significantly affected ice time, frequency of defensive zone starts, and a million other things. If you know you're not getting any goals from your bottom six, it puts so much more pressure on the top six, in many different ways.

Now, I'm not sure Dubas has put together a league-best bottom six together or anything. But on paper, they seem significantly better than last year. And who knows–if they are a lot better, maybe they can shelter Carter better, and make his shifts more impactful (in a good way) in his likely final season.

  20. Canā€™t wait until theyā€™re in purgatory for 10+ years after they all retire

  21. I'm a Kings fan, but it's so cool to see in depth looks at other teams. It's amazing that THG does 32, insane.

  22. Rem Pitlick did 37 points (15 goals) in 66 games in 2021-2022, he was stuck playing with offensively incompetent teams for all his career, Nashville, Minnesota, Montreal. Last season in Montreal, we kept benching him to showcase Veterans with bad contracts we wanted to trade, not a good environment to perform knowing no matter what you do Armia or Hoffman would take your spot, we also had quite a few youngster to Ā«Ā evaluateĀ Ā» so who would be moved aside ? You guessed it …

Hopefully he gets a real stable shot in Pittsburgh.

  23. 10:56 if I'm not mistaken, Pittsburgh had no chance of drafting first even with a lottery win

  24. I am really enjoying your team preview videos! I think what's good is you actually learn something about teams that maybe you don't really follow in much detail
