’24 Player Previews: Alex DeBrincat & Ben Chiarot | Jonathan Bernier Retires

Alex DeBrincat had a down year with the Senators, we’ve have made note of that. But Detroit needs him to be his old self and be THE guy if they are to have any hopes of making the playoffs. Ben Chiarot is the highest paid defensman on the Detroit Red Wings, but he puts up the worst production. Should he be the 7th defensman? Former Detroit netminder Jonathan Bernier retires. #lgrindonesia

  1. Debrincat is listed as 5’7. Which means he’s prob a hair under 5’6 as reported heights are almost universally 1-1.5 inches inflated.

  2. Don't feel bad. Chiarot was a shitty signing and Yzerman needs to man up and get rid of it. Eat it, bury it, whatever. Don't play him bc you pay him.

  3. Burgers is the next Patrick Kane with a Datsyukesk quality, tell me i'm wrong😁 Anyway, Larks may end up looking a lot more like Kane with a high end scorer on his wing.. and if Raymond gets the other side and progresses in the way i believe he will… look out, premium 1st line.

  4. I don't think ole Ben is gonna be around too much longer, don't hate the contract as much as most folks and i don't think moving him will be all that hard to the right team, retain some $ of course but GMs seem to like guys like him more than fans do….. or put him on wavers and cross your fingers🤪

  5. 2 D spots = 164 games. Divided by 3 D men = 55, 55, 54 games. Chiarot, both sides, 54 games total. No problem.

  6. Man you guys are getting bad at your tangents and talking about stuff that not on your list. Wonder why you run out of time to talk about the topics

  7. I feel like Chairot will be traded sometime before the end of the year. Will have to eat some salary and more theb likely not get much in return but it will be the old "addition by subtraction". To many young promising defense prospects to keep him around for the entirety of his contract.

  8. You guys are a little more optimstic than I am. Im hopeful he ends up 3rd pair and PK but I dont see him scratched.

  9. As a Sens fan, DeBrincat will not drive a line on his own but he is a good complimentary piece. He stays on the perimeter and takes lots of shots but he will do most of his damage on the PP. I think his issue in Ottawa is that he was not always the go to guy on the PP or 5v5. I think he will get around 30g/40a in Detroit but he doesn't give a whole lot more than point production. In Ottawa the fit just wasn't right, but I think it's a matter of, do you want a guy who gets points, or do you want a guy that will help you win. He's the type of guy that will score 2 goals in a game and give up 3.

  10. So, the player second in ice time was so bad that the Wings defense improved by .48 goals per game against, plus a whopping 135 point improvement in team plus/minus? I swear, "squares" are the hockey analysts equivalent of "can't see the forest through the trees". He was the beast of burden last season and now he's the scapegoat for a team that went from 30th ranked D to 23rd.

  11. I am begging Red Wings fans to get over their PTSD from one season of Ben Chiarot struggling in a new place on a mediocre team with a new coach.

You guys say it every time it comes up, plus/minus is a bad stat. Why didn't you say it this time? Do you think Chiarot was entirely responsible for most of the goals he was on the ice for? I bet if you went back and looked, you'd be surprised how often one player has nothing to do with the puck going in. 5 other guys have to do their job too.

Chiarot is one of the best skaters, makes a good first pass and gets shots through traffic pretty well, and can keep a play alive in the offensive zone. There's a reason Lalonde used him so much. The coaches and GM know better than the fans. I'm sure he can have a better season, but the idea that you're putting Chiarot on a pedestal instead of being realistic is funny to me. Every team has a scapegoat. Holl was it in Toronto, Chiarot is Detroit's.

  12. By making Chiarot the 7th D man, your sending a message to the boys that the best players will play regardless of salary. Building a culture of competitiveness is key to improving and taking that next step. LGRW!!!

  13. Chariot will be just fine, I’m convinced that this deal will happen within the first 40 games just simply because Ed will win over more ice time and that will force Stevey to deal him to a team that needs protection, edvinsson will be in the top 6 by 2024 and that’s why you need him until then, but you gotta remember his ability to win over the young guys as someone they can look up to for anything hockey and beyond, you need solid stop gap players until the core is ready LGRW!
