[MacIntyre] Spoke with agent Pat Brisson about Elias Pettersson’s wish to focus on next season, not contract talks. “The main focus will be for him to perform. It’s more that than anything else. Both sides can evaluate. Let’s sit down at the end of the year and explore where we’re at.”

So both Petey and his agent have now confirmed the extension is not coming anytime soon and it all depends on next season’s results

Prepare for daily posts about When/if he will sign.
Every time someone says they want to “focus on next season”, it inadvertently creates a distraction during the season because an unsigned extension is always a distraction.
This has been my thought all along. That Pettersson would take a wait and see approach. If Vancouver gets off to another slow start and it looks like another season of no playoffs in Vancouver, some very tough questions will need to be answered and not just about Pettersson. I think the question of Quinn Hughes staying long-term will have to be answered as well.
If the team doesn’t perform next season we may be forced into a rebuild.
I wish JT from the Colts and his agent took this route… *sigh*
Slightly worried.
I’m not surprised by this. Petey, along with the fans, are waiting to see if this team is out of the playoffs by November again before committing long term with this core.
Two 🔥hot takes🔥:
1. Everyone seems to be missing the fact we control his rights for next year. This could very easily be two seasons of “will he/won’t he” drama.
2. If we aren’t good and it helps force his hand to leave, as others speculate, a forced rebuild with the assets from a 10M+ player (plus anyone else we trade) could be the best thing that has ever happened to this club.
Basically the only incentive to sign now for the player is the risk of injury/decline in performance. Given his age profile he isn’t likely to decline. Obviously there’s a risk of serious injury but it doesn’t seem to be a big concern for Peter, so it makes sense to play out the season and leverage a year of peak performance and higher cap
