AM new short term contract, gurantees if/when Petey signs it’ll be short term?

Do you guys this that most superstars will begin to sign shorter term deals these next few years?

I’d say it’s more likely than not that we see Petey sign a 3-5 year deal at this point. Hopefully it’s 8years but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that at the moment.

Its a terrible deal that sets a horrible precedent for the teams of the League. The players will love it, though.

Remember before we bridged Petey that talks were in the 8 to 9 mill cap hit range if he signed long term?

What if the bridge was just straight up the 8 to 9 mill cap hit.

That’s the precedent this Matthews deal has brought. Short term deals dont mean smaller cap hits anymore.

Fucking thanks, Leafs and Auston Matthews /s

I don’t think Matthews ever intended to be a career Leaf. He just won’t turn his back on his teammates while they’re still putting up winning seasons.

This is the player’s version of giving his team a short leash.

It’s still 8 years or leave for Petey, IMO.

That is not the comp Allvin wanted to see. Yikes. Even if you say Peteys only worth 90%, that’s still $12×4 years or more to get more term.

After almost singlehandedly winning the Leafs their first Stanley Cup in 56 years last season he deserves every penny.

No, not necessarily. Tkachuk took 8. What the Leafs did with Matthews and Marner last time didn’t set a new trend for everyone else, and this doesn’t need to either.

It does mean he’s almost certainly going to be 11+M AAV.

Any 8 year deal for him would’ve been more. People are scoffing at the AAV but 12 and 13 million is going to become as normal as 7 and 8 used to. As the cap goes up you’ll see some guys getting into 14s and 15s or more.

It’s not uncommon for elite players to sign for 15-17% of the cap and thats what 13 million is right now.

For Petey, I’ve always said I think 12×8 is it but if Matthews signs this and we see Eichel and others sign a bit more it’ll be tough to keep Petey low.

Matthews’ deal is 15.1% of the cap (with cap at 87M). I could see Petey get maybe 12% – 13% of the cap? So 13% of 87M cap is 11.31M.

I could see the Canucks offering 10M-10.5M AAV if he signs for 5 years or less but then offer 11M – 11.5M if he signs an 8 year deal?

Matthews’ deal does pull Petey’s next contract up. He should slot between Aho (floor) and Matthews (ceiling).

This contract means that Petey will definitely try to sign later as him and Aho’s AAV isn’t much relative to what they could have made. Right now Petey probably could get an 10.5×8 but if he holds and has another career year he could probably make roughly $12m+

Way off topic but I can already hear Ron McLean gushing about how Matthews is worth way more and obviously took a discount 🤢

The video game franchise manager in me hates anything over 10. Even McDavid at some point becomes less amazing once you’re paying him like 15 million

  12. Betting on yourself and taking a shorter term contract will always be a risk. I can see some stars taking this approach but there will always be players willing to take the 8yr guarantee. Hopefully Petey is one of them.

  13. DrexellGames

Depends on Petey and his faith with the team. If he does sign short term, the team would be hard pressed to have success or face another rebuild

  14. lebangazNmash

Give Petey whatever the fuck he wants. We ain’t going anywhere without him. He’s as close as a generational talent we will ever have. Don’t even care if it’s 12m

  15. SMA2343

Petey and Hughes need 8 year contracts. They are the face of the organization.
