  1. Only in delusional Toronto is Matthews worth the highest salary in the league. The Matthews was literally not even in the top 20 in points in the league last season and is a ghost in the playoffs every year yet they pay him the highest salary in the league. Give your heads a shake Leafs! You can't build winning a team around this guy.

  2. If I look at the last 2 AM contracts, it tells me he's more interested in maximising his earnings than winning a cup. Higher cap hit % at signing than MacKinnon and shorter terms doesn't look good.

  3. Forget having Nylander, Domi, Bertuzzi and Samsonov after next year, no one will take a discount again.

Plenty of people are saying Tavares will be a lot cheaper soon, but thats not soon enough for all the previously mentioned players and being 1pts per game is certainly not under 7.5 million per year now so imagine when it’s due with Matthews at 13+.

I doubt they’ll manage to have a similarly talented team moving forward.

    Cup or bust.

  4. lol… when you compared Matthews contract to McDavid's, you lost your argument. You forgot to mention Marner, Nylander in the same sentence as Matthews. McDavid has 3 years left and Draisaitl 2, but you guys forgot you had multi- multi's and u want to be competitive. lol. Are Matthews' teammates going to have to take minimums if they want to play in Toronto? You can tell me how the Cap is going up… lol, but not for everybody and not by the amounts everybody wants mo' money, presumably.

  5. In reality , this signing and Willy is going to get his money, this will squeeze Marner out, JT isnt going anywhere…..

  6. Naw dudes, Treliving knew about Gaudreau's 5 team trade list, that's 5 team trade list, not a 5 team no trade. Treliving knew he had to sign Gaudreau in Calgary before the start of the 21-22 season or trade him and the minute July 1st rolled over, Treliving LOST his bargaining chip. Treliving knew about Gaudreau's special contract, dated Oct 10, 2016. (CF)

  7. Leafs will never win with the over paid core 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Gotta remember marner up for an extension after this year as well. Gonna have to make a choice between him as a cornerstone vs an aging JT

  9. A short term deal for Willy works for the player and for the team. Paying Nylander beyond age 32 at a high AAV doesn't help Toronto

  10. Nylander has the right to go to July 1st next year And the Leafs have the right to Trade him. In between Timo Mayer but not to Aho. Nylander isn’t anywhere as good as Aho. That’s where his contract should be.

  11. So we are paying MORE money for a guy who led us nowhere.

    no bridge deal.
    5 years at 11.
    4 at 13.25

    bad business

  12. according to Pittsburgh, the window can stay open until this group are 40…😂😂😂

    14 more years……

  13. What are Dave Bastol's odds for the Leafs winning a cup during Matthew's tenure? Safe bet against at this AAV

  14. auston matthews, already an injury prone guy, signs 4 years….essentially playing chicken with the universe to see if he can end his career without some hossa-like cash in years.

  15. I'm sorry but with what money? Next season leafs already have 60 million tied up with no goalie and only three defenseman and five forwards signed. We all know willy is going to ask for 10 plus.

  16. wow, he just signed and yall waste no time starting up the talks about "when this contract ends and he's 31"
C;mon leafs media , just stop…. just stop

  17. Love the 4 years if the leafs don't win in 4 years we need to move on without Matthews

  18. "Its actually a pretty nice compromise all around" lol no it isn't CJ..stop lying..leafs fans are smart

  19. Putting aside Matthews contract the amount of endorsement money he will make playing in Toronto will probably be more than he could make playing in any other city in the NHL. Now I know all the Leafs haters are going to scream and pound their keyboards, but having played and traveled through Europe I can say the Leafs are probably the most famous hockey team in the world.

  20. I feel a bit disappointed that Austin wouldn't sacrifice some of his salary. to help build a team around the core 4
