I recently got this autographed 1947 NHL All Star Game program from my late grandmother, who lived in Vernon BC at the time.
I am a little confused – it looks like the first official NHL all star game wasn’t until 47-48, and was played in Toronto (with the leafs vs the all stars). I can’t find anything on this game, or why they would be playing in Vernon. Were they doing a cross-country tour?
Autographs included:
Dick Irvin (Sr.)
Bill Durnan
Leo Lamoureux
Toe Blake
Kenny Reardon
Turk Broda
Leo Gravelle
Jimmy Conacher
Jimmy Peters
Pete Horeck
Doug McCaig
Max McNab
Ted Lindsay
Bill Quackenbush
Max Bentley
Grant Warwick
Bob Fillion
Sadly, no Maurice Richard, which probably irked my grandma to no end.
Does anyone have any info on this game?

The phone number to the electric company is ’53’. Amazing.
Reminds me of this gem

The fabulous fat man😂
All seriousness, this is pretty cool to see. Plus Bill Quackenbush is an elite name
That is incredible! I love the old school signatures where you can actually read the name
this is so freaking cool
Amazing to see milk advertised as a beauty product
Missed the chance to honor Stéphan Lebeau.
$10 a quart for milk?
And here I thought old nan said it was two pents back in her day
Never thought a game like this would be in Vernon. That would be something if the NHL had the all star game in a place like that in this day and age.
That’s a looooong way from the O6. Very cool!
That’s amazing. This arena outlasted all the advertisers and was sadly torn down about 5 years ago.
I personally love the concept of an All-Star team playing against an NHL roster/host city.
Kinda neat
That is cool as hell.
Weird, I can’t seem to find any info on this game either.
Probably just a coincidence, but I did notice that Larry Kwong (the NHL’s first non-white player) was from Vernon and made his debut around this time.
They need to bring back the All-star vs cup champions format
I read this in my head in the kind of old timey voice you’d see on old news reels.
It’s pretty neat that they held all star games that far west back then as well – I’d imagine the players all took the train across the continent.
My kid played in a tournament there a few years ago – that was a great old barn. I think it was demolished a couple years ago.
I cant remember specifics, but i believe the first all star game was unofficial and put on by players to raise funding for another player who was seriously injured/ill. I had an NHL ProSet hockey card from like 92 that detailed this back when I was a kid so my memories of the details are super fuzzy.
That is amazing!
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
I’m from Vernon, and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this. This is the coolest thing I’ve seen about this city in a long time!!
They tore the civic down a few years back, which is unfortunate because it had to be my favourite place to play.
Capitol Taxi and Douglas Pharmacy still exist. Everything else is unfortunately gone I think…
They put a park in where it used to be, and it’s so sad because of the amount of hockey history that was had there. I really wish they built a new arena there instead and carried on the legacy.
And because there’s not enough ice here…
