NHL Network recently ranked Dougie Hamilton as one of the top 20 defensemen in the entire league. They placed him at number 12 and it really shows how far Hamilton has come within a year span. Last season, he wasn’t even ranked despite being a Norris Trophy finalist in 2021. Hamilton had a monstrous season that saw himself breaking Scott Stevens’ record for most goals by a New Jersey Devils defenseman in a single season. He also tied a franchise record in the process.

He's being paid like a top 20 dman. I know the injury wasn't his fault, but last season was more of what I was hoping for with that high cap hit. Another season at that level or just below it and I'd be thrilled this year. LGD
Dougie is too one dimensional D for my liking. A great shot and few playoff goals don't justify the insane cap hit. With 8M+ cap players you need game breaking skill which Dougie cannot do. You have to have players that can push the offense even when trailing against a game like the Canes that do not give any freebies or many high risk shots. Things get worse since he cannot compete with any younger forward if caught off position.

Goals, assists, and points are not what we need from a star defenseman. I am a devils fan for longer than you have been alive. But a top 20 defenseman should see penalty kill time! Siggy is more deserving of this award!
Dougie is an excellent defenseman, no doubt. He came in 6th in Norris Trophy voting. I don't think he'll have then same issues he had on other teams here and I hope he's able to build on what he's already done and do even more. As far as turnovers, if you handle the puck then sometimes you'll turn it over but the key is not being sloppy or reckless. Which I haven't seen from him. But if there are mistakes or turnovers that's why you have a partner and a team to back you up. Everyone gotta help out that's part of being a team.
