Maple Leafs have an obvious issue with paying too few players earning the lions share of the salary cap. Then they do this. Ridiculous.
Nylander to the hawks confirmed(we’re gonna be ass next year and will probably only make depth signings in free agency)
Look at the players from the devils
No contracts above 9 million and the core is signed long term
They’ll win a cup long before the leafs even reach the 3rd round
This just makes me appreciate the business model of New Jersey, even more. Virtually every player, took LESS than they could have gotten elsewhere. In some cases, it was significantly less money, in order to build a monster of a team. Tom Fitzgerald said “You can’t take EVERYTHING. You need to leave something on the table, so that we can bring great players here…” From Jack Hughes, on down: they all took less than they could have gotten elsewhere. Matthews? NOPE, he wants the WHOLE EFFIN POT. Trade him, while he is at maximum value, for 2-3 good players, and some excellent prospects. I don’t see Toronto going anywhere with him on the squad. Just my opinion…

The ownership group is petrified of taking one step back to take two steps forward, so they go and ruin their chances of actually being competitive as a result. The CBA ends in September of 2026**, just before this deal is up, so place your bets on how much the max contract AAV goes up, and how quickly matthews demands that to stay in Toronto (again).
i wish just one player on the leafs took a bit of a discount. actually build a decent team for the playoffs. The top four or five players are multi millionaires already.
Draistle is the kind of guy to sign a 1 year cheap team friendly deal. Unlike Mathew’s he cares about more than the regular season and money. Actually shows up to the playoffs, he knows oilers need cap space, he will allow the team to acquire more peace’s.
Leafs have 30-35 million dollars in capspace next year. Why wouldn’t they be able to pay nylander? Makes no sense, you don’t know what your talking about

Nylander isnt staying, why should he? If they asking him to take a discount when clearly Matthews didnt and Marner wont then why bother. Go get money in the open market

klingberg takes $2M pay cut, nylander gets a $2M increase and the leafs are off to the races, they are just in the early days of negotiations after watching nylanders interview with friedman its clear hes not going anywhere.

As a Habs fan I love Matthews so much. Just by his selfishness alone he will make sure the Leafs will remain a Toxic environment that will self-destruct.
Racking up points in the regular season and dissapearing in the playoffs then signing high cap hit short term deal plus his frown face demeanure is a plague that the Leafs embrace and it makes me so happy.
Now, everybody on the Leafs is gonna want to brake the bank with this GM and since he's brand new it will lead to the drastic downfall of the Leafs. I guess it aint that much of a fall when you've just won 1 series in 20+ years, but I digress.

This really dosent make much sense to me. Not only is Mathews coming off a year where he barley even had 40 goals. Sure he had a 60 goal season the year prior but i dont see why toronto couldnt have given him like 10 milllion for 1 – 2 years so they might have a chance to keep nylander and to see if he will be that good. Obviously mathews is a superstar but why now get forced to either trade nylander or let him go in free agency. Maybe even Flipping mathews and signing nylander would've been better because you get more value then if you traded nylander and you get nylander back and more cap. And the argument that Mathews cannot get traded is false. Gretzky got traded twice. I think this just makes more sense to me because it will keep the leafs more competitive for longer. Something like Mathews for Kent Johnson Zack Werrenski and a 1st rounderr 2024 is worth more then a 50 goal scoerer. change my minnd.

I have no idea how someone can sell the idea that Matthews is worth almost a full million more than McDavid without getting laughed out of the room, let alone actually succeeding…

Yzerman recently said that these midterm, bridge type deals, are becoming more preferable from a team and player perspective. Just after we all say the bridge deal is dead.. bam.. its back.
Leafs' business model is flawed & broken. What's the fix? Trade them all?
I feel like there should be a markup percentage that gets calculated just because you play for Toronto. The amount of Jersey sales and local commercials, National campaigns,.. I think you'd get paid way more in like big market cities like Toronto

The 4 year term is perfect. As a Leaf’s fan as soon as he didn’t sign 8 years for the first contract you don’t want to sign him for 8 in the second. Cause if they can’t win in 13 years of Matthews/Marner it’s time to blow it up and rebuild.

Toronto is a joke. They pay Tavares who’s under a PPG in his career over 11 million a year and now they have the highest paid player in the NHL and still have Marner and Nylander on their team. They learned nothing from the previous management apparently. Have fun still losing in the first round maybe getting to the second again. Teams like this don’t win cups.
