State of the Franchise: Edmonton Oilers. Cup or Bust, Again…

The Edmonton Oilers are in Cup or Bust mode as long as they have two of the best players in the league, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Tyler Yaremchuk of The Daily Faceoff and Oilers Nation joins for the state of the franchise. We discuss why this team will be in Cup or Bust mode for the foreseeable future and if Tyler is starting to worry that McDavid and Draisaitl will become this generation’s Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Next, we analyze their offseason, including drafting Beau Akey and how the goaltending will shake out between Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell. Finally, Tyler gives his worst and best-case scenarios for the Oilers this year, why Darnell Nurse is so important, and where the Oilers finish in the Pacific.

  1. The Oilers and Leafs are in Cup-or-bust mode. Although I remain more confident about the Oilers' ability to get to a Cup final than the Leafs', last postseason the gap narrowed significantly, with the Oilers' and Leafs' having respectively gone from, 2 postseasons ago, having won 8 and 3 games to 6 and 5.
